Bloody part-ex values!!

I took delivery of my new BMW this week. 318D Sport Plus on NHS lease. 340 per month which I consider ok, actually.

Had the dilemma of what to do with my 2006 Grand Cherokee 3.0 V6 diesel. Bottom book price was about 6k, but checked the various car buying websistes, and for 80k miles was between 6800 to 4800. Similar cars on Ebay weren't selling for similar prices privately and mine had 80000 miles!

So bit the bullet and accepted 6500 from a local car buying hypermarket. I actually cosidered this a reasonable deal as I will no longer have depreciation or any other kinds of bills to deal with i.e. 550 road tax per year!!!

Just checked today and they have it for sale for 8995! Now I expected they would add about 1k on the price but this is beyond ridiculous!

Best of luck selling it in these current climes, bearing in mind it does about 22mpg and is 550 per year to tax :-(

Any thoughts on whether I got a reasonable price? Or are they massively optimistic on their current selling price!

They will probably end up selling about 8 and will persuade themselves they spent 500 - 1000 refurbing it therefore their profit is modest.

As you say, good luck to them. People spending 8k on a car don't generally want mega running costs.

What they ask for it and what they get for it are 2 different things, as has been said they have probably spent a few quid on it and want to make as much as they can, have a look in another few weeks and see what it's up for.

Ps, this is the reason I never look to see what price cars I've part ex'd are on the forecourt for, it must be so frustrating seeing it.

So you've seen it for 2500 more than what you got for it. But they arnt going to make 2500 - nowhere near.
By the time they have took off the costs to prep it, warranty, MOT as well as their own dealer expenses/overheads (sales peoples wages, rent/rates/running costs of the dealership, advertisments etc...), and they will probably drop the windscreen price, they will probably come out with 1000 - 1200 profit tops.

What price did you expect them to put it up for? 7500, maybe 8000? If that were the case they would only make a few hundred profit and its not worth their while.

I wouldn't moan about what they have it up for but would say it seems you got a good price for it so well done

If we assume they've spent 250 on whatever work needed doing/warranty etc and they sell it for 8k, that represents a 18% profit margin.

That's less than most businesses operate on.

As others have said. What they have it up for and what it sells for are 2 different things. They paid you folding for it, and are trying to make some profit - this is how they make a living.

You got the ease of never seeing it again. As others have said, they have to prep, possibly service, MOT and warranty the car, as well as stand by it for at least 3 months.

I traded my M6 to Sytner. They stuck it up for 5k more than they paid me for it, but I know it needs a service, some brakes, an MOT and a couple of other bits.

As it happens, 3 months later they still have it, and have dropped it by 2k...
