SA2010 Helmets - Head Clearance

Hi all -

So I will be tracking my car for the first time next weekend and I'm looking for helmets. I'm concerned about head clearance however.

I just tried on a Shoei, but when I sat in the car, my head was forced into the sunroof well.

I'm 6' and drive a 328 sedan. Certainly doesn't seem unreasonable. Does anyone have suggestions of brands/models? My only requirements are that it be Snell SA2005 or SA2010 compliant. M2010 is allowed as well.

It's not the helmet. It's the car and the way you sit.

Typical rule of thumb is, when you sit in the car, if you can fit a FIST between the top of your head and the roof liner, then you will not have interference with a helmet. If you can't do so, move the seats around until you can find a comfortable position while your tailbone still sits flush with the base where the seat and back "hinges." Sometimes you may have to lean the seat further back in order to accomplish this.

I'm 6'2" and clearance with a helmet is really an issue for me in my E92. In my proper "competition" seating position I can manage a few mm of clearance if I sit perfectly right, and sometimes that may involve slouching a bit in the seat which I would really rather not do. If I move my seat further back or lean the backrest back it helps with clearance a little but greatly compromises my ideal driving position. If I didn't have a sunroof this wouldn't be an issue.

An aftermarket seat usually sits much lower and eliminates this problem.

I ended up reclining my seat a bit more and pulling the steering wheel towards me. The only thing really that can't be adjusted is the shifter placement, but it still feels fine.

I ended up going back and getting the Shoei RJ Platinum and it fits fine in the car. Granted, there's maybe a millimeter of clearance between my head and the roof, but it fits and I can move around comfortably.

Something to consider in the future... I guess all you can really do is lower the seat and recline it slightly.

I have founded Simpson Bandit Helmet which is of the best helmet manufacturer in the world. You will feel very comfortable after wear this helmet and It is Snell SA2010 rated helmet.

In my car, the seat will go lower if I slide it all the way back first and then lower it. Strange but it works.

I think the best bang for the buck m2010 helmet is the HJC CL-16 for $116 off revzilla.com. Only negative I've read is poor ventilation, but for autocross it shouldn't be too important as there isn't much airflow through a windshield. I found it to have a great fit and visibility.

Yup, if plan on going tracking a lot more, I'd invest in a seat too. It'll strap you in your car which will be a lot safer as well. Other than that, sit a bit further back and move your steering wheel forward a bit and that should help you out
