CDV: same on E91 xDrive as M3? Any point to delete/modify?

I bought a 2012 E91 LCI 328i xDrive Touring two weeks ago. It was one of the last units to roll off the line (produced 4/2012).

The car has 6MT and I've been reading a lot about the supposed benefits of the CDV modify/delete. Two questions:

1) I've seen it mentioned in some posts that the M3 CDV doesn't have a restrictor, so a delete/modify has no benefit. Is this true?

2) Oddly, when I looked on RealOEM.com for the part # of the CDV for my E91 LCI 328i xDrive Touring, it turned out to be the same as the M3! Why?

If you search by part number 21522283914, you'll see that this restrictor-less CDV is shared by the M3, the F12 650i/M6 and the E91 xDrive!!! No other non-M 3-series model uses this CDV. Here's the RealOEM search results:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref....eur=&details=1

Do you think this is a simple data-entry error on RealOEM.com, or is there a valid reason for my xDrive wagon to use the same restrictor-less CDV as the M3? Is there any point for me to attempt a CDV modify/delete?

Thanks y'all

If I search by part # 21526765120 instead, RealOEM matches every other non-M 3-series model:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref....eur=&details=1

Every model except my E91 LCI 328xi Touring!!!! What gives?

OK, so this issue has been really bugging me...can't get it out of my head. If the CDV-delete is beneficial, I really wanna do it. But I'm finding clues that it is redundant for my E91 328i xDrive.

So I did more searching by p/n 21522283914, the restrictor-less CDV (aka Lock Valve) for the M3, 6-series, and...supposedly...the E91 328i xDrive??

BMW of South Atlanta:
http://parts.bmwofsouthatlanta.com/p...522283914.html
...also says it's used in the E91 328i xDrive!!!

ECS Tuning:
http://www.ecstuning.com/ES41456/
...also says it's used in the E91 328i xDrive!!!

Latvian version of RealOEM:
http://www.realoem.lv/part.php?part=21522283914&lang=en
...says that it's used in the E91 325i and 328i xDrive, and also the E90 325i xDrive!!!!!!

This can't be a data-entry mistake, right? It appears to me that if you have a 325i xDrive Sedan, 325i xDrive Wagon or 328i xDrive Wagon, your CDV is the same as the M3 CDV which doesn't do anything!

What might be the rationale behind that? This is my theory: if you have either of these two combinations:
- the lowest output engine + xDrive
- the medium output engine + xDrive + wagon
...then BMW believes that the drivetrain configuration is beefy enough to tolerate sudden onset of engine torque WITHOUT the CDV? Or that performance would be far too muted WITH the CDV?

What do you think...guys? Am I crazy? Opinions please...

So if I am reading this right would it be possible to obtain a 21522283914 valve and replace the restrictor equipped valve in a 335i and effectively delete the CDV function?

That's what I understand (discussed in many other CDV-related threads)

Except the Burger Tuning unit costs $20 while the OEM unit is $9.71 from Tischer: http://www.trademotion.com/parts/ind...&siteid=214672

Or for free you can take yours out and punch out the restrictor - it comes right out.

Though being the slightly anal type that I am, I bought a second one and punched it out so that if I ever need warranty work on that part of the car I can put the original back in. <whistling and looking around innocently>

Just ordered the M3 unit from Tischer. I will probably mod the OEM unit once I swap them and maybe sell it on here. I want to have the replacement unit ready to go so I can minimize the time the clutch lines are open. I am going to see if I can borrow a vacuum bleeder to bleed the clutch after the install as well.

Back to my original question...thoughts? Will a CDV-delete have any effect at all on my E91 328i xDrive? Anyone? Bueller?

I have been driving manual transmission cars (four, five, and now six speed) since my first car, a 1966 Pontiac GTO Tri-Power. I have not experienced any clutch-related or shifting issues during the first 1000 miles I have had my 2012 335i xdrive 6-speed coupe. What exactly is the issue the CDV-delete remedies?

do people know that you can take out the CDV, and just plug the lines into each other? in other words, just remove the damn thing?
try it and see if there is a difference. if you like, and am worried about warranty, go buy a fake one, or core out your own.

My car is brand new. If CDV-delete has no effect for my car, as implied by the common CDV (Lock Valve) part number between the M3 and the E91 325i/328i xDrive, I would rather not mess with it.

You CAN do this, but the lines don't really fit quite right if you do this. They are bent to accomodate the CDV afterall. But technically it will work.

I find it hard to imagine that this is not a typo. Why would only the '12 e91 not have the valve? Unless is it a runout of parts or something. For sure my July '11 e91 had one, the hole in that thing was like a pinhole! Night and day difference in shifting.

Reminds me, my cars 1st birthday is Saturday! Unfortunately I am 1500 miles away for work, with a Jetta S(uck) 2.sl0 courtesy of Hertz!

Was yours RWD or xDrive? The information I'm finding implies that it's the xDrive wagon with low/mid-output engine that uses a "fake" CDV like the M3. I have my doubts...like you I wonder if this is a data-entry error. But given that I am finding the same information in multiple places, perhaps there's some validity to it?

Of course I could verify all of this just by pulling out my CDV and examining it. But given that my car is brand new, I don't want to mess with it unless there's a real point to doing so. I usually don't mod my cars -- the CDV-delete and perhaps an SSK are the only drivetrain mods I'll ever consider.

I don't think its been proven that all 6MT, M3's do not have a CDV restriction. I remember seeing some M3 posts last year that some of the later M3's had a CDV! Older M models had them!! I think the only way to really know for sure is to remove your and inspect it. Its not hard to do.

And chances are that your car will have a CDV restrictor and getting rid of it is soooo worth it!

You do not have to buy a new CDV part (from a vendor or bmw dealer). You can also just unplug your old one and plug in the clutch hose with out the CDV. But I wanted that "stealth lool" just in case I had any clutch issues down the road.

I bought a spare CDV from my dealer and used a 3mm punch to knock out the restrictor...

I did this mod on my 07 n54. Best mod to date!!! Well it comes in close. Lol
I just punched out the center of my oem one and everything works like stock but better.
The transition when shifting is crazy smooth as compared to before. There is no need to buy another one...this is a straight forward mod and relatively easy.
