What is value? Hankook vs PSS - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

Hello

I'm in a tire dilemma and looking for opinions. I have used both Hankook V12 and PS2, but not the PSS. I know that in almost ways (or all) the Michelin PSS is the superior tire. However, my current Hankooks have done the job very well for 25000km and, aside from the mushy turn in, they are good tires.

I'm getting new rims and face the following choice:
1) Get Hankooks for $1000USD
2) Get Michelin PSS for $2000USD

Both prices include full installation, balancing, and alignment, and represent a competitive price in the Taiwan market.

I really can't decide if there is enough value in the Michelins to justify their 100% price difference. The $1000 does matter to me...I'd rather keep it in the bank, but I'm not going to be going without dinner if I do spend it on the tires. Thoughts and suggestions?

I just went from the V12s to PSS and there is no comparison, especially in grip. My car makes 470wtq and the V12s spin even with a 3rd gear roll-on. The PSS are like GLUE! Def worth it for me.

If you're not having major traction problems I'd get the v12s. For my setup in 19", the v12's were around $8xx and I got the PSS for $13xx OTD including tax and certs.

I had to look twice at those prices, then realized where you are! Both of them are ridiculous, but I personally would not pay $2000 for a set of tires.

Why not get the Conti DW's? They seem to be cheap and near the PSS traction wise.

Compared to PS2, PSS last longer and have better wet performance and a slightly harder ride. I haven't tried V12s.

ExpensiveTaste...thanks very much for the suggestion. Looking at the comparison on TireRack, they do seem like a good "halfway" suggestion between price and performance. I will look into them and see how much they will cost in Taiwan. If anyone else has other suggestions, or more comments on any of the three tires I'm now considering, please chime in!

the question i think you need to ask is if you're really concerned with lots of traction (are you tracking your car? is your car making a lot of power that it keeps breaking the tires loose under acceleration?) If you are, then get the PSS, but if you're just using your car for every day use and some spirited driving, i think the v12s will be more than sufficient for your use and you'll get to save a lot of money which you can spend on other mods.

that's a lot of money to be spending on v12s... you may as well get ultrac sessantas at that price point. way better tires.

your pss price seems high as well. are you sure your tire shop isn't pulling a fast one on you?

edit: and i would never consider v12s on these cars stock, let alone modded. they're one of the worst tire experiences i've ever had. my all season conti DWS were way better as a budget tire.

tires are the single most important part of your car's suspension. i never understood why people would upgrade their shocks, bushings, and wheels, then still run general exclaims or v12s...

It depends on your driving style and what you plan on doing with your car. If you're driving mostly freeway and highway, go for the V12's. But if you plan on hitting the track once in awhile or if you're pushing a lot of power, go for the PSS's. No point in buying really expensive tires if you're not going to really use the most performance out of them. For most people, the Hankook V12's should be efficient enough and I'm sure you'll be really happy with them (depending on your style driving of course)

Either V12 or pay a little more for Conti DW. Based on what the OP described, PSS is not worth the extra money. A DW is also light weight, anywhere from 3 to 5 lbs lighter than most other recommended tires.

I am big on unsprung weight reduction. Just installed 18" F14s and DW tires, dropped 9 lbs of unsrung weight at each corner, that is compared to my stock 17" with RFT. The weight loss is very noticeable, I have a section of freeway incline to measure my mods

and the car definitely pulls much harder.

Adamsclub...thanks to you and ExpensiveTastes for pointing me in this direction. I think this is the tire I am going with, but I have not had time to get some prices. Sometimes, due to insane tax policies, the prices of can be highly distorted! (e.g. PSS cost twice as much as V12...and sometimes this huge difference can exist between car products that are similarly priced in the US market but have a huge disparity here!)

You should get a friend to buy a set here in the U.S. drive around the block and send them to you in Taiwan as used tires

V12 is $800
PSS. $1200

I'm on PSS currently

Went to 5/32 in 7-8 k
Miles

Might get warranty replacement

I wish that were true, but alas, there are taxes to be paid. And the shipping costs of buying them in the US and shipping to Taiwan would already equalize the price, and then customs will slap on the tax no matter what. A little hard to hide what's in the boxes!

For some reason, Hankooks have a lower tax rate than then Michelins, so the price distortion is very high, meaning that PSS are double the price in this market.

Anyone who's lived in Asia or bought cars in Asia knows the prices are higher...my 2.5L 325i E92 cost me $90 000USD if you want to talk about rip offs!

But taxes are lower, opportunities for me are higher, so pay with one hand, give with the other!

i had PS2s and they were by far the BEST tyre i've owned. I prefer them to GY eagle F1, Conti sport 2, Flaken 452s - tyres I've used in past.

I just couldn't afford the PSS and Americas Tire (Discount Tire) had a rebate on the Hankooks, so I had them installed and I couldn't be happier. Compared with the RFT it is night and day.

Also, at my work I've been noticing a lot of Hankooks on Lexus, Acura and other vehicles in the parking lot.
