Fantastic news, I'll be watching.

The irony in all this is that the initial GB will be for the 7" FMIC. B/c it's a 7" core, this def means that there will be cutting for it to mount properly. Also, no one has any idea how resistant the VRSF IC is to heatsoak, how effective it is at bringing down IATs & what kinda impact it will have on pressure drops. There's also no need for a 7" core unless you're building a dedicated track car.

IF I was penny pinching & had to choose again, the AA Sport FMIC is probably your best, established option. $675 for a quality core, IC piping & Cold Piping up to the CP.

EDIT: Lutz is running a GB on the AA Sport FMIC, $600
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=654982
thanks for the info, im bout to buy the AA i think, or i might just go balls out and get the HELIX

5" kits are still under development and won't be available for at least another 2-3 months. The 7" kits will be in stock in about 4 weeks.

Very interested in pricing.

7" would probably be overkill for my needs, but what's the harm in cooler air?

Bigger isn't always better, heat sink effect isn't as beneficial when the car is actually moving, and sometimes a larger core can impact boost threshold.

Ya but for those of us planning on eventually going larger twins or even a large single it would be beneficial to upgrade to a larger core now as opposed to buying 5" an having to sell and re-buy.

At least, these are my thoughts from what I've read on these forums. Someone please correct me if Im wrong.

iirc the Helix FMIC is a 5'' core? vishnu single turbo shop car running their single project fine with just the helix.

But also with four meth nozzles and a reportedly more efficient single turbo (less heat?). Not exactly an apples to apples comparison.

It's a 5" Stepped Intercooler, so it's got more "core" than a 5" but prob not as much as a 7". The only thing you need to watch out with used ICs is if the fins are excessively damaged & if oil has contaminated the core (clogs it up, lowers efficiency)

Since when does being stepped add core to the IC? :s

From what I understand it being stepped or not is a design for cooling efficiency and has nothing to do with volume of core....

At least that's what I gather from all these convos....seems to be common sense anyways

If you look at all the high HP cars & reputable tuners (Shiv + Vishnu, Terry + BMS, and even some of the COBB test cars IIRC) all use Helix cores & it's not by accident

Terry is now running a CX racing intercooler on his 135i It just so happens to be the largest, but you better be prepared to do some custom fabrication to get it to fit.

Fair, but like you mentioned the CX Racing/Big Tom IC requires some more "permanent" modifications to be made then your standard 5" IC
