Power Steering Pump Failure (twice)

Hey guys wanted to see if anybody had any insight for me.

I bought a 2007 BMW 335i with about 55k miles on it in May of this year. About 3 weeks after owning the car I had my power steering pump come apart (blow up according to the mechanic) and take out a few pulleys. After a tow and about a week to get the part all was good. Luckily I had purchased an after market warranty and all was taken care of except for a few $.

Today I was on about a 4 hour road trip and was 20 miles from my destination when I felt my power steering go out again. I pulled over and when I got out of the car I saw oil all on the side of my car and on my wheels. So I concluded my power steering pump had exploded again. I have active steering on my vehicle. Does anybody have any clue or insight why this keeps happening. It has barely been over a month since the power steering pump was last replaced. I was not doing anything out of the ordinary when it happened. Thanks in advance for all the help.

Are you sure the pump failed again or is there a different leak such as a busted hose, loose clamp that let go finally, or some other external component? Was it a new BMW pump or some off-brand reman unit?

No way to tell what's causing it over the Internet with no further information. I'm not aware of any pump issues on these cars, active steering or not. Racks are known to fail due to high temps, but that's mainly pro racing applications.

When the first pump came apart, it likely pumped metal pieces into the rack and throughout the system. When they replaced the pump, if they flushed out the system, they likely did not get all of the metal floating in the system and worked it's way into the new pump.

I am not saying this with certainty, but I have seen this happen with A/C systems, and other similar systems, so it would be possible here too.
