Car Damage, What Should I do?

So I get a text from the other half whilst on my way home from work the other day to say that the side of her car is damaged, that it looked like someone had driven into it and then fucked off.

There is no denting just some quite deep scratches and rubber marks, after some work with the polish I managed to remove some of the damage but a large portion is too deep and would need to go to a bodyshop, it is exactly the sort that you would get from someone just clipping it at low speed.

Obviously we tried to think where it could have been to try and investigate further, however the car had not been anywhere since I had cleaned it on Saturday and the damage definitely wasn't there at this point.

In the end we put it down to a lost cause, until yesterday when I was out cleaning the 335 and my neighbour came home. Now we share a communal parking area so she parks next to my car and as she pulled on I thought she was going to hit the side of my car, she got pretty close. All of a sudden the penny dropped, the angle that she came in at would have been the perfect angle to cause the same sort of damage to the car as has been done to the TT.

After she had gone I had a look at her front bumper which sure enough was damaged and didn't look straight. I am 99% sure that she has hit the side of the car but obviously have no way of proving it and after not putting her hands up to it she isn't going to admit to it in a hurry.

So now I don't know what to? Do I go round and call her bluff and say someone saw her do it and see what she says? Or go about it another way?

Any ideas, or what you do?

Thanks for Reading

I'd confront her and say you've bumped into my car and might not of realized and that gives her a chance to hold her hands up.
Also did the scratch have any of her paint on it?

Agreed. This sounds like almost too much of a coincidence. Ask her, politely, and give her a chance to confess. Definitely check for paint, as gary mentioned.

No paint as the side of her front bumper (the part that would have hit my car) is plastic. However I will try this approach

Compare the height of her plastic bumper trim to the damage on your car. If she has a graze or scuff on that bit it's 80% likely to be her considering your car hasn't moved from there.

Also you probably wouldn't feel that kind of damage in a car so she probably isn't trying to hide anything, simply just didn't realised.

My wife hit our neighbours car once. She immediately went and knocked the door and told them. There was practically zero damage to their car but hers was pretty bad. The neighbour was cool about it as they don't care much for their car.

I take it you know the woman since she is a neighbour. It's maybe not worth ruining any relationship with her by bringing it up. Maybe just mention it to see if she says anything or subtly let her know that you know. She clearly doesn't care much for cars so may resent having to pay up to repair something that she isn't even aware that she did.

I would say you had a note left under you wiper saying that they saw someone in a TT scratch your car and if you need a witness to call them, put a mates number down just in case she says 'call it'.

She will probably panic well before it gets to that and say 'I didn't realise I had caused any damage, sorry.'

It's tricky, but you obviously want her to be more careful in the future. Just be very straight with her and ask her if she remembers hitting your car. If she says no, there's not much you can do but she'll be more careful in the future.

I wouldn't give her the choice of saying no I would just tell her that a neighbour knocked and told you she had hit your car but you might not of realised.

Go round, knock on the door then as soon as she answers, punch her in the flange. That'll learn her.

Is she pretty ? That's the obvious question that could determine how you deal with this.

If she is pretty go knock on her front door and if she doesn't answer go round the back and bang her back door :-)
