Noise doesn't start until 29 seconds into the video. Hard to hear on the video, but it was very loud to everyone else around. |

Belt noise w/ the A/C on
The 335 D engine has two belts: main, serpentine belt (drives alternator, power steering and several idlers + tensioner) (water pump is electric) and the short one, that drives A/C compressor directly from the crankshaft pooley. Replacing the main, serpentine belt tensioner doesn't make any sense-it's unrelated to the A/C compressor. apparently, an "Elasto Belt" is being used to drive the A/C compressor (like a big rubber band, that you stretch to install (using a special tool), and doesn't require tensioner)

I drove a diesel golf for a few years, I had a belt squeal because I drove through a 'toronto construction sandstorm'.
It turned out my pulleys had too much dirt in them, cleaned them out and sprayed some wd40. Solved the squeal I had. (Also my cabin air filter was clogged with dirt too, I just used the vacuum on it temporary fix)

I have a feeling some bearings or compressors will not like having this tighter belt in the long run. Hope that happens under warranty. |

I test drove a 9000 mile 2011 used d and at start up it had loud belt squeal. Salesman said it's because it hasn't been started in awhile.

The dealer here in SD fixed it with the new belt after not being able to replicate and telling me that "they do not fix based on a noise." I'm just glad they did as my car is out of original warranty and service contract. All the best to the rest!

As I expected as the summer progressed and the hotter and more humid it got the dreaded squeal returned with a vengance! I could not take the embarassment anymore, so I dropped the car off at the dealer this morning and I have the SA the part number listed above and said this is what fixed the problem for other d owners. We shall see....
In the meantime I have a boring boat of an F10 528 w/that aweful stop/start feature to abuse until I get my precious diesel back. |

We just had the A/C drive belt replaced due to the squeal as well. Within a week of the first time it did it, it became intolerable.
We had an F30 328 for a loaner. We were so happy to get our d back. I don't think we'll be getting into an F30 anytime soon. Start/Stop is awful, idle is quite rough, steering numb, interior feels cheap, WTF is up with the cup holder lid?, too gadgety for it's own good. |

As memtioned above, took the car in the 3rd time for dreaded belt squeal. Dealer had it ready to go with the aftermarket Korean belt installed 24 hours later, but asked if they could keep it one more night to make sure there was no issue at start-up the next day - no problem! Picked the car up yesterday and so far so good!
While at the dealer I complained of brake pulsing so the dealer also REPLACED my front rotors and brake pads despite having another 22k mi to go (according to computer) on the existing pads. I also complained about the mpg decrease since having the emissions recall performed (egr replacement and repgoram) and the SA everything appeared to be operating within in spec, but that they will document the problem and that perhaps BMW will investigate if they receive enough complaints - so for everyone else COMPLAIN if you are seeing similar results since having the EGR work performed. It sucks that I am now getting high teens mpg city. Last edited by cssnms; 08-09-2012 at 08:59 AM. |
