Alot of forum folks are going to flood dealers with claims, I bet BMWNA will set a decible measurement for rattle pretty soon. Still gonna be subjective for now.

i spoke to a SA and tech about this pending tsb at the time.. the dealership has the say on whats "normal" or in need of replacement. many cars have been '"flagged" due to meth lines, ecm box and wiring tampering, intakes, even full exhaust systems, your car better be as factory comes.. more then half the cars that go through are denied or considered "normal" rattle... i personally work at a european car dealership for over 10 years and have got to know a few bmw techs within the area. and are really covering all grounds due to high "warranty per R/O claims" just some info..

So, a crapload of time and/or money to uninstall / reinstall the go-fast parts and the odds of getting new turbos are 50/50 at best.

So, there's no wastegate swap/maintenance ? They always swap the turbos to fix the wastegate rattle ?

No. Sometimes they just replace the wastegate actuator assembly and/or just update the software.

So for those of us with a permanent type flash, eg Dinan. I wonder if we will be denied? Or will Dinan pick up the 8y/82k emissions extension? And also since related, the 10y/120k HPFP extension?

Anyone heard from BMW or Dinan on these extensions?

I brought mine in and played dumb.. "My engine seems to have a rattle when i let off the throttle.. it might have something to do with the turbos..." Well, they acknowledged that it was wastegate rattle and said they ordered new actuators. They took the whole thing apart, replaced the actuators, and GO FIGURE, the sound didn't go away. So, they replaced both turbos. After having my car for two+ weeks, I got it back and there is no rattle at all. FWIW, my car has 93k miles and is still under CPO. I gladly paid my $50 deductible

Turbos are a cheap replacement compared to what else can happen to the engine. If I didn't have the extended warranty, I would have been out of pocket for most of those expenses, the extended warranty saved my ass a ton of money.

I am still unsure who this extended warranty is enabled to. My 335i has 50k miles and is not under any type of BMW warranty, is this a recall (will replace independent of warranty like the HPFP is), or is this extended warranty only eligible for those who have a warranty still? Please excuse my misunderstanding, but i've yet to receive an answer.

Thanks

I believe that regardless of your current warranty status, if you fall within the specified requirement (8 years/80k or something like that?), then you qualify. But in your situation, I would check with your SA before you let them do any work on your car.

So let's say you've got a FMIC and catless DP's installed a month ago, and have just started to hear the rattle, and you're out of warranty of course... What would you do?

1 - Go in with the car all intact, and have them diagnose it, and hope they'll fix it?

2 - Or just have them diagnose it and give authorization for work, hope your SA is friendly, and lets you take car away to remove mods, and bring back stock to get the work done?

3 - Or take all mods out, then go to dealer, which seems totally risky in terms of putting a bunch of money out to take it all out (I just paid 6 freakin' hours of labor to have them put in a month ago... LOL), hope they then give you authorization to have it fixed, otherwise, you're out a bunch of $ and have to pay to have it re-installed too!

4 - Since I'm just out of warranty, and have only got 30,000 miles on the car, wait til it's really bad (the rattle), then do which one of the above?

PS How much do two turbo replacements at a dealer cost anyway? Parts vs. labor?

+1

I'm guessing this is the dilemma many of us face. Pay to remove upgrades, only to risk denial based on subjective bs, or try to get some sort of "preapproval" before going through the hassle? What really burns me is that we all know the problems with these cars wastegates are not related to anything we do to them- it has been a design flaw since day one, which commonly pops up even on stock cars. And BMW knows it.

almost 1/3 the cars value.

This is what i am doing. I already talked to my SA this week and while he is fine with the mods i have on my car but advised me to take them off (DP and Exhaust). The reason being is because for cases like this more then likely BMW-NA will send an inspector to verify before proceeding to approve the work. He did sound confident that it would be covered though.

For me its worth it, I have rattling and also a bad seal so it smokes like crazy. I am doing the work myself to uninstall everything and reinstall. I would rather revert to stock then having to do the turbo replacement. I set up an apt first week of Sept so i will keep you updated on how it goes.

Good to know, I might try that if it gets down to it. Oddly enough, my rattle seems gone now, which makes me wonder if it was just something else I heard that one time...

When you get the rattle, does it initially start occasionally (like not every time you drive the car)? Or once you get it, it's always there, just gets worse and louder over time?

PS Any idea as to how much in dollars parts and labour cost for replacing turbos?

I was quoted $3300 OTD by a local Bimmer specialist. Pretty pricey, but better than the dealer by quite a lot.

What are you going to do if they deny it - say they tell you it's "operating as designed" What a waste of $$$

I would do the work myself as well if I had these four things
1) Know-how
2) Tools
3) Place to do the work
4) Time

..............Sadly I have none of the above.

Sounds like your SOL then if you don't want to pay up.

How is it a waste of money i am doing the work myself? Also why would they deny, its wastegate rattle sounds like it my car is playing the tambourine on steroids nothing normal about that. I have already had work done Good Will Work done to the car though the same BMW Center and the SA was awesome to work with.

I don't see a big deal take off mods, go in for service and if its a part they warranty i don't see a problem having it covered. In the mean time drive around in a 2012 BMW loaner while it gets fixed
