328i Black Exhaust Tips - DIY

Well I got tired of my rusty/half black exhaust tips on my 2011 328xi BSM E90, so I decided to take care of it the cheap and easy way.

$5 and 30 minutes later...

1x can of spray paint black semi-gloss HIGH HEAT
1x brillo pad
1x pair of gloves (recommended)
1x Shotgun News (or other tool to catch excess paint)

As typical, I started this project and then decided to take pictures, so I had already pulled off the exhaust tips. Which took some elbow grease, but not too much. Gloves help. Make sure they are cool to the touch and just PULL! I found it helpful to rotate it slightly left and right to loosen it up. My right tip came out much easier than the left.

PICTURE 1. Remember which one goes where... Long one on the left...

PICTURE 2. Brillo pad, soap, and water. Too easy. Moving in the right direction. Read Shotgun News before beginning project.

Lightly coat with spray paint and then let dry between coats. I did three coats.

PICTURE 3. You can't see it but I hung mine up with jumper cables...

PICTURE 4. Installation is simple. I found it easier to tilt up as I placed them back on.

PICTURE 5-6. Completed.

Hopefully they last, but if they don't I always have more spray paint...

Or I can find an extra grand for the PE...

How would this work on chrome? Would I need to sand it?

Yes, I would sand chrome. I felt the alluminum was porous enough that I didn't need to sand it. To sand chrome I'd start with 120 and then smooth it out with 220, but there are plently of ways to do it...
