Headlight Washer Flaps not sitting Flush

Hi Guys

As above, the headlight washer flaps aren't sitting flush. They're slightly open by a noticeable amount.

Maybe its me but when I pushed one down, the other seemed to come up more?!

Any ideas? Don't want to push them both down too hard just in case.

Pre lci had a common fault affecting the push tube (usually caused by freezing weather) the up shot of this is, if it's sitting proud now, chances are the next time they're used when you're driving you'll lose one or both!

In my lci coupe I've had to have both springs replaced due to them fatiguing and not closing properly, so looks to still be a poor design!

(Pre lci are attached to the pop up tube, post lci they're attached on a hinge to the bumper)

Hi mate

Thanks for the reply. Crap, that's not good! Good thing I've got a 6 month warranty. I'm hoping that's covered! Guess I'll be taking it to a local specialist.

You should be able to push it back in? Have you tried pulling it out to see if it is loose? I seem to recall you can push them in so they 'click', but its a while since I did it.

It might be worth mentioning, as we're getting round to central heating, frosty morning time of the year! To start using the correct grade of windscreen additive (I buy the 20 litre tubs of BMW stuff after losing two sets of headlight washers)

Or...

Removing the fuse for the headlight washers, which has been mentioned a few times on here before

I'll try pushing them back in but surely the next time they come out they'll do the same thing?

As Coopersim said - Could always take the fuse out as a temporary measure but will defo have it looked at whilst I have the warranty.

Where is the best place to buy the additive - or is it dealer only?

Just tried to push them in but no click whatsoever

Pulled them out slightly and can see the springs attached. Can't see how the flaps would pop off though?

Gonna take it to an indie though an ask what's going on. Can anyone recommend a good specialist near Watford?

Just realised you have a cab so it might be different to a touring.

On the saloon/touring, the entire piston, which the cap is attached to, can fall out. I don't think there are any visible springs on these.

I used to buy from Anneka on here, there was a small discount. I'd just go to the local dealer now, 20 litres will last an age!

It came to 41.83 in vat for:

Make sure in the meantime if you have to wash your windscreen that you turn off your headlights (when safe!) as this will prevent the headlight washers from activating and the washers popping out

My LCI ones don't go down either. Someone here said there is no active mechanism as such and it's just the water pressure that pushes them up. I figured this meant that the issues was related to blocked tubes which, if you don't use BMW fluid means you have to pay. So, it's good to hear that there are springs in there which could mean this may be covered under warranty. Makes sense now I think about it that pressure pushes them up, and a spring takes them down again.

It's affecting both of mine though which is suspicious - why would they both break at once?

I think it must be fatigue, meaning both fail at roughly the same time. Mine is a 2011 November car if that helps, maybe its a faulty batch of springs? The dealer ordered both the springs and the caps and had them painted, luckily the springs were replaced and the original caps refitted as the colour match wasn't great

Mine's an 09 so they've lasted a bit longer. Yeah, I see your point about fatigue. I'll mention it to the stealer when the car goes in for service next month. 100 quid excess on the warranty though so I may just decide to push them down manually to save the cash

Actually, is there a way to deactivate them? I don't have xenons so don't really need them.

There was talk of pulling a fuse out on one of the older threads regarding this

It is not the springs.

It is the seals inside, I did a thread on it use search.

Only option is to replace them - bumper off job but not too tricky.
