BTW lubro moly has an LL04 low ash oil approved for the d's

AMSOIL had a posting for different oil capacities w/the M57. I do not use their oil. No reason to. Their "LL04" is no better than M1.

There is an ongoing debate about whether or not to change the factory fill earlier than the car's computer requires. The people who are doing early changes feel that the early mile break in on the engine results in varying amounts of detritus that they want to get out of their engine. Many people also like the idea of cutting the OCI recommended by BMW in half (roughly every 7500 miles) to enhance the longevity of their engine.

The people on the other side of the equation simply follow BMW's recommendations.

One side issue has been whether or not BMW uses a "break in" oil on the d. Some of the early UOA's noted that the factory fill is very low zinc, which some thought indicated a break in oil. In fact, BMW has specifically stated in one of their technical bulletins (don't have it handy) that they do not use break in oils on the d. Also, Euro LL04 oils almost universally have adopted a low zinc approach to the spec, whereas LL04 oils in the U.S. (Mobil 1 specifically) have significantly higher levels of zinc, yet still meet the LL04 spec.

So what does bmw actually pay for? Have the 4year/50k warranty. Can i just take in my car every 7500k at my convenience?

I drive 2400 miles/month.

Well went to dealer to get price of an oil change and def flush.$350 dollars. Wow.

Anyone have the technical manuals showing how to do an oil change and def flush on a diesel. I'm going to bring my oil kit from tischer and let a local mechanic do it, but he has never worked on a 335d.

-Castrol SLX OE Prof 5w-30 available at BMW dealerships and maybe Audi/VW.
-Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 (Pepboys, Autozone, etc)
-Valvoline MST 5w-30/5w-40 (NAPA, and probably others).
- Motul & Total (Has a few LL-04 but they're usually mail order only)

M1 ESP 5w-30 is the cheapest by far (~$7.50 quart) in my neck of the woods.

There are a few dozen or more oils but they're only available in Europe/Asia.

PS. Always change the filter.
is one of these oils superior to any other?
