Newbie saying Hi + Pics of car...

Hi,

i've just bought an e90 335i auto m sport saloon yesterday.
my car history until then was..:-
a mk1 black golf gti many moons ago which i loved and sadly crashed. This was followed by a maroon citroen saxo which i stripped out and ran nitrous through with my brother. It also had 2 x 12" subs in the back.....made the window seals loose....used to let in a little rain water now and then........ I was in my late teens then and a little crazy.....i have some fond memories of that car too.....my next car was an e46 328 ci sport. i left that unmodified. it was nice but dull.....then i got an '04 renault clio sport which was fun-sadly that got vandalised....then i had a mk2 mazda mx5 which i left alone and that was a fun car too......and currently i'm driving an e46 330 ci remapped by bw chip tune. it goes quite well. that had a nice ICE install done by sextons.

anyway, my husband drives an M5 i'm a little fed up driving a car that's a lot slower than his + he was talking about supercharging it so i needed to put a stop to that so i when i bought the the 335i i made him spend the 7k he was going to spend supercharging his m5 on this car instead lol...

the current spec of the car is as follows:-

M sport, auto, black with black dakota leather interior, prof sat nav, dab digital radio, heated front seats, 18" rims.

and the extras i've ordered are:-

CF - spoiler, diffuser, mirro caps, front splitters.
black grilles
bmw performance power kit - which i think is software, charge cooler and air ducts
bmw performance exhaust
bmw performance suspension
alcantara led steering wheel
bmw performance hand brake+shift lever.
bmw performance door sills.

and i'm looking at sourcing some nice 19" rims....not sure which.... torn between 313's or 369's or maybe something more old skool.
and am toying with the BMW performance brake kit.....for bling reasons....they look nice.

Wow, that is a nice list of upgrades! So much win. And unfortunately there was no BBK officially for the 335i. What some people tend to do is fit the 135i kit (with 6 pot Brembo made brakes - branded BMW Performance), but the 135i has smaller discs, so although it's an upgrade in some areas, it's a downgrade in others. But like you said, the main appeal is that they look awesome.

Whilst you have one hell of an upgrade list, i would definitely trade one of those upgrades for upgrading the Prof Nav to the latest version. This is a huge upgrade in terms of functionality and style. Can be done quite easily for about 1000-1200 and would really modernise the car.

Enjoy - you have a lovely car.

As you love the mods so much you might be interested in joining EvoTechnik. London based german mod community. But too quiet the last few weeks on there but a great set of people.

Nowhere near enough people with the cash and time to mod letalone run two such brilliant cars at the same time so hope to see you there!

Barr the running costs of an M3, I did wonder the same thing.

E92' M3's can be purchased now for around 20K. I would have thought your upgrades would take the price of your car close to the price of an M3, if not more.

Welcome along anyway.

Thanks. When I had a look at M3's I couldn't find one on the used BMW network in the same condition / mileage and at 20k. Secondly once you factor in insurance and maintenance, the cost goes up. Also quite like the idea that with this car because I'm having it de-badged people will think I'm some rich husbands wife in a pimped 320d... Until I put my foot down!

Car already has prof sat nav so what's the difference between that and 09 prof sat nav??

Once I sort out the 19" rims I'm going to look at an AP big brake kit... People will laugh but I noticed that the performance door sills on my car are black with yellow lettering which matches the AP's nicely.

Welcome!

I have a modded my 335i as such I'd recommend:

Ditching the bmw performance power kit and opt for a Piggyback tune (JB4/Procede) or remap. Running meth (as I do) you will need a piggyback to control/optimise the flow.

BMW performance suspension would likely be more expensive than Eibach pro springs and Bilstein Shocks which work well. A full coiliver setup like Ohlins would be my first choice though.

AP brakes will do nicely!

Consider a Quaife ATB differential (I wish I had one) -
http://www.birdsauto.com/content/qua...w-and-mercedes

Later:

M3 suspension arms and subframe bushes.
Intercooler upgrade
Catless Downpipes
Its never ending!!!!!

With these mods, an E60 M5 would have trouble keeping up!

Loads. Too much to go into detail.

The one in your car at the moment is called the CCC iDrive, the new one is called the CIC iDrive. Google it.

There have been a few additions to CIC iDrive from 09-present, in functionality (addition of being able to read out SMS's on screen, open documents, use app's etc), but nothing major and nothing that would bother me - as all of this is still based on the CIC iDrive which is great. The 09 CIC iDrive still has all the features that people really care about, which is the layout, the ability to store music on the internal HDD, the speed of it, the HD screen, the 3D nav maps, the iPod album art etc

CCC iDrive is like Windows 95 - good, but a bit slow, featureless and clunky.
CIC iDrive is like Windows 7 - sleek, snappy and full of features.

If you've got the money to drop 3500 on AP brakes, updating your iDrive to CIC iDrive would be a probably the best bang for buck upgrade to your car.

Tend to agree, the CCC system is a bit shit and very clunky - The CiC has the handy shortcut buttons on the controller and the programmable buttons too.

The general consensus with the BMW Power upgrade is that although its well thought out in terms of engine longevity in mind and you get to not worry aobut your warranty, its very expensive for what you get. I think it only adds about 15-20bhp and costs 800. Whereas something like an Evolve map/JB4 adds around 70bhp for 399.

BMW power kit is

Software
Auxiliary Water Cooler (including air ducting)
Enhanced Radiator Fan

Gives 320bhp and 332lb/ft.

No reason why you couldnt stack a JB4 ontop of this to run the aquamist meth kit and up the boost rather than get a custom map... JB4 has the failsafes built in too.

Catless downpipes are where the real power/torque is to be found.

I've only recently had some hiflo-catted ARD downpipes fitted and love them. There is a slight smell but not noticeable inside. Noise wise mine sounds almost stock..till you give the right pedal a good squeeze (at motorway speeds its as quite as stock). I went for the catted version purely for emissions/MOT reasons but plenty of people have the full decats without any problems at MOT time (the full decats also get more power).

Quaife LSD is fab if you got the cash spare, since your in London Birds BMW will get the it fitted without problems. The diff allows you to put the power down much more easily and stops the annoying TC from coming on every time you touch the throttle. Whilst your at it get some M3 subframe bushes and better antiroll bars fitted at the same time since the rear subframe has to be dropped for the diff (my car is with the garage now having the latter two fitted...should have got it all done at the same time as the diff but didnt have access to the funds till now). Google "Rear Antiroll bar 335i" and your see just how pathetic the stock bar is compared to aftermarket versions...

If your now going down the non-BMW route from what i can understand the BMW Performance brakes aren't much better than the stock 335i brakes (they do look nice though). AP racing do a nice big brake kit but thats very expensive, alternative is to get better pads/brakelines/fluids which should cost less than the BMW stuff and offer better performance (again my car is in the garage getting this lot fitted).

The JB4 is a great bit of kit, I waited for my AUC warranty to run out before fitting it to my car and have to say should have done it sooner. The extra BHP is quite addictive!!

Be warned theres lots and lots performance bits for the 335 (most of the good stuff isn't from BWM though) ...set your self a budget otherwise you soon finding your self spending lots and lots of , I've already gone over my budget but only by a few so after the car come back from the garage thats it.....though Koni FDS shocks do look nice
