Unemployment

Coming close where i could be unemployed so whilst im searching for a new job and if i become unemployed i wondered does anyone know what unemployment benefits are available to me or where i could find out? First time this could be happening so not sure how to approach it.

Thanks

Speak to Willhollin. He has been scamming the benefits system for years. Don't think he has done a days work in his Adult life?

Perhaps because it's the "off-topic" section and he didn't know that the benefits were listed on the government website - I didn't either having never used them. Perhaps he hoped someone could point him in the right direction, as indeed they did.

I'm just guessing though.

Ask your present employer, they should give you all the relevant form/paperwork and advice. If they're any good that is. You’re perfectly within you rights to research these things once/if you’re given notice.

Edit. If a few of you are going from the same dept. You might want to play things quiet and get ahead of the game. Don’t discuss things with “work mates “to much.

You can make a claim for JSA up two weeks in advance of your unemployment. (though Jobcentre Plus will probably say you can not!)

You can do so on line here

Got paid off last year, and got @65 per week in JSA. Well, its paid fortnightly when you sign on. Thats all I got. And you only get it for 13 weeks or something.

Dunno what happens after that, as I got another job within the 13 weeks. The people in the job centre were nice to me. Possibly because I wasn't a career scumbag. And they let me only look for work in my field / salary range for a couple months before they started pushing me for anything. TBH, I was already applying for anything, as I just wanted to work, but I was always over qualified for the poor jobs they had to offer, and I wouldn't have gotten anything anyway through them.

Contribution based is based only on your National Insurance contributions and takes no account of savings or your partner's earnings etc. This is only paid for a maximum of 26 weeks.

Income based JSA is a means tested and depends on your savings and household income. you can stay on this for a long as you qualify, so unless you get alternative income or get a job you continue to qualify. There is no set length of time for Income Based JSA and you can remain on it until you find work.

The first 3 days of a claim are waiting days and are not paid.

Depending on your circumstances you can also receive Housing Benefit or Support for Mortgage Interest (after 13 weeks) and a host of other reliefs.

It helped me out big time... I used to work for an employer so horrible that I just got fed up one night that I would rather wind up homeless than to work for them another day (and believe me I came damn close), and DEFINITELY a big help when my father passed on a month later and enabled me to have a bereavement leave of sorts for a few months and establish a business. Definitely look into it but don't use it as a crutch; they like to pull all sorts of loopholes.

make sure you do go and claim what you are entitled to.
I was unemployed coming up 5 years ago, and because I had saving etc I thought I wasnt entitled to anything. It was only that my parents nagged me and told me that Id been paying stupid levels of tax and my NI for years and because of that I earned the right to go and speak to someone that I did, and was eligible was JSA.
like fulcrum says, you can start any claims in advance of your unemployed date. worth looking into.

The OP is from well over a year ago. I would hope he has found another job by now.

It was a difficult period but you have to come over it..... They didnt give me anything but said i need to dip into my savings first. Not a nice feeling being unemployed.
