Hmm...so now i'm a bit confused again. 50% say its normal, while the other 50% has thermostat issues. I guess I should just have it checked out at the dealer just in case.

Usually after a nice hard run, one the internal fan and radio is off, you can hear the fan still running under the hood! I just give it a few minutes to cool down, and it's shuts off.

Old but useful post. Not sure if you call it a whine. To me it sounded like a mini jet turbine. Also, I just had dealer recharge refrigerant noticed it was very loud afterward. Guess I assume AC runs louder when it's fully charged. I could hear it in the cabin and then when I got out with the engine on it was very loud.

Another thing I noticed when I start it up and AC on max fan is turned on a few seconds later, the RPMs shoot up significantly for about 10-15 seconds then drops (but noise is still loud and noticable). Once I turn off AC, it's "quiet" againl.

I also had loud fan noise problem until BMW replaced my thermostat (part # 11537549476). My car no longer sound like a 747 taking off the run way.

I used the INPA software to discover the faulty thermostat code. I don't think it's something BMW will actively notify or replace for you if don't tell them about it. I had complaint about it before checking w/ INPA and they told me the noise is normal.
