diesel v petrol running costs

i have a 330i e93. if i put normal unleaded in it lacks power and sometimes pinks so i always use tesco 99 octane which is about the same price as diesel. im of the opinion that normal unleaded is rubbish and any performance orientated engine should use the more expensive higher octane. now when you compare the cost of this to running a diesel the diesel, if you are running one for the sake of economy, makes far more sense.

So you gonna get a diesel? The 335d is meant to be a beast especially if you have it chipped. I've always been against diesels because of the loud clatter from the engine but modern diesels have quietened down considerably and the great performance coupled with decent economy is making them oh so attractive to me. I think my next car will be a diesel.

I think we've done this quite a few times on here recently and came to the conclusion there isn't much in it when bought in the correct circumstance.

Buy which you prefer driving.

The guys with diesels also say the premium diesel makes their car run better. So buying the best fuel for both will always means diesel is more expensive to buy.

I've found no major difference following using both normal and premiuim fuels for some considerable time in my 330i.

The issue with diesel for me, is the size of the bills when something goes wrong. Like DPF, injectors or turbo. On a 330i, the injectors do occasionally go but they are not to sort, but how often have you heard of DPF or turbo issues on a diesel? I'm sure the bill from one of those will considerably offset the MPG difference between petrol and diesel, hence I drive a 330i

Get a 330d, they rarely go wrong and are the best all-rounder by far

I feel bad when i hear 320d owners saying that their turbo/DPF has failed and BMW want like 1000 to put it right. Bye bye fuel savings

The way i see it, cars are the only thing in my life that i love, that i spend all my free time either talking about or reading about. I will happily pay a couple of hundred quid more in petrol a year to keep my hobby. We not on this website because we love how much MPG our cars give us, we're on this site because we all love cars, driving and the thrill it gives us. Diesel cars simply do not deliver anywhere near the thrill of a petrol car for me, ie. 335d. Yes they have mountains of torque, yes they'll launch you down the road almost as quickly as the 335i and at the same time do 10mpg more, but they do all of this without any sense of buzz or excitement. Hearing my 335i blast up to 7krpm is probably the best part of my day, hearing the sound echo off buildings as i go down narrow streets makes me giggle like a child and i wouldn't change it for anything.

In 5-10 years we'll all be driving 1litre 3 cylinder hybrid diesels anyway, so the longer i can hold onto my 3litre 6 cylinder twin turbo petrol, the better.

10-15 years ago I would have probably liked this but I've grown up since then. I dont know that many people that scream their engines up to 7K as it can get very tedious. I like to push the throttle and go. But everyone to their own.

Haha, ok maybe not 7krpm, but 4krpm is a daily thing. This is why i love my 335i - i can just push the throttle and be off with no drama or noise, or i can rev it high for maximum smiles-per-gallon.

A lot of people do grow out of this and just want a car that's more sensible, that does good MPG, but there are many many people who don't and still love the howling noise of an engine as much at aged 50 in their Porsche 911, as they did aged 18 in their Ford Fiesta. I have a feeling i will be one of these people.

Enjoying fast cars with nice sounding engines and using revs isn't a sign of immaturity or childishness as you may (or may not?) be suggesting it is, it's something is addictive, exciting and grin inducing.

Fair enough - if I owned a 335i I would probably agree.

I had a Golf GTI 2.0 DSG petrol and used to get 28mpg if i drove it with care. Before that I had a 3.0 Z4 and got about the same mpg, I sold the Z4 because it kept going wrong! I do 70 miles a day and my fuel bills were huge. Ive now got a 330d,its faster than the golf was and very nearly a match for the Z4. The fun thing for me is being able to afford to drive it quickly rather than having to nurse it all the time. I get 44+mpg and get home a lot quicker.
But you only save money with diesels if you do medium to high miles as they cost more to buy,but they do hold there value better. 5p per ltr between petrol and diesel though makes no real difference

i have a 335d as well (my second one). ilike driving the e93 as its a covertible and sounds good with the exhaust. however i love the D to bits, i went for a D rather than a 335i as i prefer the way a diesel performs to a petrol, not really one for loads of revs. as for economy the D averages about 40mpg and the 330i 30mpg. ive tried the premium diesel and can honestly say havent noticed the slightest bit of difference and think its all hype! i spoke to a retired engineer the other day and he reckons they have only scratched the surface of diesel engine technology so watch this space.

have you tried one with the perf exhaust? thats something else!

I will drive a 335i until my wallet tells me no more! Petrol engines just feel more pure and sporty. All you cheap ass diesel drivers only got them because your tight! If you all won the euro millions I doubt you'd fill up your garages with diesels!

D v i debate - *sighs* there'll never be a hard cut answer - it's all down to the driver, what he/she wants from a car and the their individual requirements. I went for a D because frankly, all I've ever owned are Diesels LOL.. apart from 1 Alfa Romeo 156 2.4ltr petrol. Was very fast back in the day :-)

I love my 335D to bits but would also love to own an M3... In 2 years, the E92 M3 is mine! Watch this space ;-)

I'm sorry but I just can't believe that your car pinks when running on 95 Ron fuels, if it does I'd get it to BMW quick because that's not right!

had a similar problem with a 3.0si z4 went back to bmw on numerous occasions but they never solved it. i did in the end i sold it!

I've gone from a Diesel SEAT Leon FR to a 335i, my first proper petrol engine.

I used to get ~500 miles out of a 55l tank in the Leon, i get about ~250-300 miles out of the 60l tank (i think) in the 335i - when i hear the burble of the exhaust i couldn't care less!

No doubt it costs me more money having a 335i instead of the Leon but i've only done 850 miles in 5 months so i'd rather have the petrol.
