If i didnt do over 20k miles a year i would be in a petrol engine (prob a C63 coupe) you cant beat the sound of a petrol engine but if you do alot of miles then a diesel makes sense. The torque on diesels now days makes them quite appealing too also with the good economy.

this has got me thinking, what sort of yearly mileage does one have to do before a diesel works out the cheaper option overall i.e. considering additional buying cost, depreciation, sellability, fuel, servicing, maintenence etc??
just looking for some crude mileage figure for a 3 or 5 series beemer... |

I seem to do about 18 - 20k a year mainly B roads / motorway driving (fun driving
)I don't know if that warrants a Diesel but I bought my 335D after I saw how immense they perform and the mpg it returns – for a car that throws 286 bhp standard and 350 mapped and returns 35-40mpg still doesn’t fail to surprise me. MEGA was another reason haha. My god does his shifts swiftly! Having said that, I have in this week alone had E46 shaped drivers in 330ci and 325d LCI stay on my tail at speeds I won’t mention I got so cheesed off how they managed to stay on my tail. Normally I’d put my foot down and the baby flies! I put my foot down and although it flew, these cars stayed with me and it bugs me to Death!!Surely a 325d LCI and 330ci cant keep up ?!?! Maybe they were mappd / chipped – I don’t know but either way, I drive my car with a lot of joy and pride and generally like to think I am driving a gentle monster! Does a 335d really need Mapping to say ‘Buh Bye’ to the likes of LCI models and older gen e46 330ci’s etc? Rant over ![]()

Your not driving it properly hahaha and them runflats dont help as it brings the traction light on all the time unless you disable it.
335d is not super quick as standard but when mapped its alot better and driven right it can pull from quite a few things. Back to the miliage point of things i suppose its difficult to say what miliage makes sense for a diesel, if your thinking along the lines of a 320 then im guessing it would have to be alot but if your looking at a 335 then id say 20k+ would warrant a diesel.

I drive a mapped 335d and yes it hurls you down the road at an astonishing rate but it does so with so little drama that you have no emotional appreciation of the speed.
I daydream about the throttle response and noise of a naturally aspirated straight six manual. As far as running cost go, I get 28mpg around town and 40+ on longer motorway journeys. Not too much better than a 330i I suspect. The 335ds do have lots of niggles with their twin turbo set up, comparable probably to the petrols fuel injection / ignition issues, but expensive issues are fairly rare. |

Don't forget, as cars get newer, their engines may churn out 15% more power, but then they always end up weighing 10% more than the previous model! The F30 i think has broken this mold a bit as it is very similar in weight to the E90. |

I did look at the six cylinder BM diesels, but after injector and DPF issues on the Golf, I didn't fancy any more of that. Personally, I'd have to be doing a very high annual mileage to want to buy a diesel again.

For fucks sake don't get a diesel mate, life's too short. When you finally croak and get to the pearly gates and St Peter asks what you drive and you say 'I fill up at the black pump sir', you've got no fuckin chance.
After a lifetime of petrol I made one fuckin mistake with my last car, never again. Would you put a diesel engine in your GSXR1000? No thought not. QED. ![]() |

Main running cost is depreciation, not fuel. I bought a 330d for £30k and sold for £13k after 3 years: then a 335i from £22k to £10k in 3 years. Go figure.

Ooh lot of hate for diesels, I used to hate them until I started driving them. No vibration and hardly any noise. Oh and its saving me money to buy beer with

I do love diesels but after hearing the M135i i'm pretty much sold for my next car.
I think i'll miss the ability to ring the cars neck along back-roads and still see 50mpg. Thats certaily something people forget when they calculate running costs. Driving even modest petrols in such a way has always resulted in horrific mpg. |
