Wondering what to do, get winters for the 18s or get steel wheels or alloys and get a 16 inch set up on the go , what's best and what you got ??

We have a set of winter tyres for our efficient dynamcis.

Car is for sale though, so doubt we will fit them.

If anyone is interested in some for their "ED", please let me know!

They are Goodyear Ultragrips. Latest model, cant remember the exact model - but only bought them last year and used for about 2,000 miles so they are still over 7mm and almost as new.

I have sorted mine out this week.

I have got:

17" staggered sport wheels - £150
Refurb - free by a friend who is a paint sprayer.
2 x 225/45/17 Falken HS439 - £96 each new from my tyres
1 x 255/40/17 Falken HS439 - £130 new from my tyres
1 x 255/40/17 Falken HS439 - £30 7mm part worn from eBay.

Never even saw any snow last year.

It isnt about just Snow. Winter tyres perform better than summer tyres below 7 degrees, and on ice, slush, dewy roads etc.

Mine should be delivered tomorrow, 18 square setup alloys with Continental TS830P 225/40 18 tyres, I bet it doesn't get below 7 degrees now ;-)

Not sure i can be bothered to commit to my Anti-Kneejerk Winter Tyres 2012 campaign, i've got too much to do. I'm trying to stay away - not responding to edowin's post above is tough The first day that it is below 0c i'm going to have to stay off this forum!

I've gone for 189-style with OEM size Falken HS-439s (225/40/18 and 255/35/18). £50 for the wheels, £160 refurb in gunmetal, £440 for the tyres from mytyres.

It's all about the better suitability for sub-7degC temp driving conditions for me. We still got a lot of snow last year (Scotland, house being 170m above sea level in the countryside) but it was nothing compared to winter 2010:

I picked up a set of barely used Falken HS-439s yesterday (from another forum member) and I'm intending to fit these to a spare (staggered) set of MV3's.

Last year I had some (square) MV3's reps fitted to my 335d Saloon and noticed the impact this had on rear wheel traction due to the reduction in tyre width. I realise the staggered set up won't work as well in snow, but based on last year this is no "biggie" and I'm hoping to achieve better cold weather (<-7)/standing water traction with this set up.

Please note, as I've now purchased these tyres sods law will now kick in... We're likely to have the warmest winter on record

Hmm I've been considering but cant justify ~£800 for a couple of days snow, think I'll just get some snow socks and work from home when I can.

If someone wants to sell me a set for half that price I'd probably buy a set

Ever used these?

I have a 16 mile total journey every day to work, don't know whether I can justify £800 on new wheels n tyres too. Seems I would be better investing that in a boat!

Not used em before but from what I read, great for getting you out of a situation but you cant drive on them 'normally'. But it might get you out your street/estate to the clear main roads

might stop you sliding into the car in front when the temperature get down to 0°. We may not see snow but freezing roads can be worse

OK if Subzero isn't biting then I'll have a go.

We live in Britain not Siberia so unless you live in deepest darkest rural Scotland or somewhere similar, winter tires are a waste of time and money. Just drive a little slower\more carefully and if it's so bad (very doubtful, last time we had any really show stopping snow was about 15 years ago) then just don't go out that day.

Driving for 20 years in the UK and never needed winter tires.
