First oil change.
My service advisor said that once the warranty runs out its going to be about a $400 service for the oil change and diesel fluid!!
Is he exaggerating? I'm sure it won't be cheap but that just seems redonkulous! I'm sure there has to be a few d's out of warranty what have you guys paid for oil change/ diesel fluid service? |

My car is close to the 3th dealer oil change. I did myself 3 in between oil change (at 6 K miles after dealer oil change). I use a top side oil extractor, that make it very easy. My cost for the oil and filter has been around $80 to $100, depending oil and filter that I use and where I get it. There are multiples choice for the LL04 oil (Mobil, Liqui Moly, Valvoline, Castrol, etc). As for the DEF, I did not have to refill it myself. You can get 2.5 gals for less than $12.
I have a NAPA near by, they carry oil (multiples choice of LL04), filter and DEF. The only item that I have to order ahead is the oil filter. It usually takes 1-2 days and it is made in Germany. |

He's probably referring to some sort of full service which includes more than just an oil change. For just an oil change it's not anywhere near that much. You can top-off your DEF yourself.

Yes, that is either highway robbery or more than just the oil change. I've done my own in between oil change with a topsider as well, cost $70.30 for the 8 quarts and filter from the dealer (with my BMWCCA discout). As others have said, $25 for 2 2.5 gallon jugs of DEF so the total for the service (DIY) is just under $100.

It cost me $50 bucks (oil & filter provided) with local BMW/Porsche independent shop.

$400 will probably be more than just oil change, filters and DEF
It cant possibly be that high just for that. Maybe they'll top off all fluids and all that but really shouldn't cost $400 in my opinion!

Ok thanks guys. I've borrowed a Pela oil extractor from a friend and used it several times. I think I'll pick up one, they aren't that much. The cost of the oil/filter and def are reasonable.
Thanks for the tips. |

for those of you sucking the oil out, where is the filter, do you have to get under the car to change it? Just curious, I would like to change between intervals too, but not sure how to get under the car.

Oil filter is on top at the front of the engine. It's a cartridge filter underneath a black cap.. Fuel filter (replace ~34K MI) is underneath rocker panel IIRC.

No need to do in between changes. Ive been doing them but im going to stop as there is a poster on the fest who has had detailled oil analysis done and confirmed the oil change interval is ok

I'll post my same 2 cents I did on the other board. As long as you drive the car so the oil gets good and hot on a regular basis, yes the oil itself is good for the recommended 13K mile intervals. But it's what the oil is holding, which in the case of a diesel includes suspended soot particles, that worries me. And while the engine is close to bullet proof the same oil is lubricating the turbos with somewhat delicate bearings. For a $50K+ car, that I plan on keeping a long time (purchased, not leased), I sleep just a little better doing the mid cycle oil changes.
For duramax - once the oil change time limit expired for me, it stopped showing oil mileage completely and went as a red, change your oil alert. |

Just a couple.of weeks ago you said 6k miles. I would wait for the notification. BTW the # of miles showing isn't actual.

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I've been taking the D to my local dealer for interim oil changes. Until my last oil change, the charges have varied between 125 and 150 depending on the amount of DEF needed to top off.
On my last visit, I went to pay and they told me it would be $380. Needless to say,I made them dig into it with me and attempt to provide a justification or the charges. They tried to pull a couple of "we needed more DEF this time"s to which i replied, "OK, then that accounts for $20 of the difference, now let's find the rest of the delta." Much to there chagrin, we eventually put this bill next to my last. When they did, it was obvious that they were charging an increased shop fee and an additional hour of labor (same Scope of Work). After 30 minutes of all of our time was wasted, we agreed to $150, but under the understanding that any future paid oil changes would be at their new circa $400 rate (which we won't be needing to worry about because I'll do it myself for that kind of rate). Time to find a new "stealership"... (Dc folks, it was a certain formerly three-letter dealer in the northern burbs).

It is a KNOWN fact that the STEALERSHIP will throw the book on you, that said, what I mean is that you come in and they say "well, the job is 3.5 hours(example) and parts are this mjuch, total cost, your screwed!!" (get a loan!!) do it yourself if possible or better yet get an independent shop you provide the oil, I plan to use AMSOIL as i have for the past 25 years!!

That is disappointing to hear, I've had nothing but great experiences with this dealer since the change. I recommend seeing SA Jeff Doss when you go back - very professional and courteous. It may not change the shop fee, but he is a good dude, in fact I was so happy with his service I wrote the ne GM of the dealership (former GM of Tischer BMW) a nice note, to which he replied promptly. I will ask aboout this rate and so-called shop fee next time I go in for service. |

Overall, I would say the change has been positive (despite a few growing pains in the beginning and the increased margin expectations on low dollar invoices). The loaner fleet is certainly 100% improved. Nothing wears on a guy like dropping off an x5 for warranty/service and being handed the keys to a Toyota echo by the enterprise rep :-)
