Do the newest n54 turbos eventually rattle like the early production ones did?

As I have recently said, I was fortunate enought to get new turbos under the 8/82 warranty extension. It is SO weird to have absolutely NO RATTLE whatsoever on my car, and just to hear the engine.

Obviously, I got the most recent revision of these turbos...the same ones used the 1M.

Has anyone heard of rattle developing on these improved turbos? I can't find any complaints about rattle from 1m's, so I'm hoping that is a good sign.

I'd imagine they shouldn't at all. Hence the ext warranty to fix the issue

Mine are making so much noise now even with the PROcede correction set to 30 they rattle... I have been after the dealership for the past 25,000 miles. At first they said it was normal, then they said it would cost $1600 to find out if they were out of spec for my CPO to cover it. Hopefully I can get in next week and see if they will honer the warranty now.

I got mine replaced under the new extended warranty. I still hear slight rattle (low rpm), but nothing compare to what it was. I'm kind of hesitant to put any of my mods back on. I like not having the annoying rattles

I think they will, what does BMW say? Did they change anything with the manufacturing / parts of the newer turbos?

I highly doubt you got a set of turbos off a 1M considering their rear turbo is the same as the 135i and won't fit in a 335i. Brand new turbos and wastegate assemblies shouldn't rattle anyways (at least not anytime soon, give it a few years lol)...

My 08' doesn't rattle at all. Knock on wood.

Alfred, what dealer took care of this for you? Murray?

Okay, granted the exhaust manifolds are different. But the actual turbo units, along with the wastegates, are the same.

Maybe there is an easier way to phrase my question: Has anyone heard of a 1M's turbos begining to rattle as it puts on miles?

They have been revised over time, and are better, but still are not bullet proof. The materials required to last are very costly, and even those will not last forever. Your best bet for Wastegate longevity is to keep the wastegate actuators in perfect adjustment, as the further the internal wastegate bushings wear the further out of adjustment the actuators go and in turn the faster the bushing and shaft are worn. Hope that makes sense, but I have seen even some 1M cores come back and have alarming amounts of wear considering the age and mileage.

Thanks Rob, but I'm wondering: How does one keep the wastegates in "perfect adjustment?" Is there some sort of maintence routine you'd recommend?

Id say there should be, but since its difficult to do (on the front especially) not many will do it. Id definitely suggest checking them anytime the downpipes come off... Perfect time to check it out.

Id say ideally every 15-20k miles would be good maintenance interval to ensure utmost longetivity of the internal gate shaft/bushing.

Mine is a July 2006 production with no signs that the turbos have been done any time in the recent past. They rattled like hell until I adjusted them. No severe shaft play, just a bit on the clevis pin, some on the WG shaft.

I thought the same about mine until I installed the Catless DPs
