335iS DCT Broken Drive Shaft
It was a matter of time when it was going to happen. With the addition of aftermarket downpipes came the increase in torque.
So yes, and becareful, 450 wtq is the shaft breaking point. I broke mine tonight at the track perhaps mostly due to wheel hop |

Just my 2 cents, but I highly doubt 450 tq broke the driveshaft. Sounds like wheel hop did. Those of you that want to safely put down power cannot continue to ignore suspension mods on this car. Wheel hop is absolutely devastating to your driveline.

the drive shaft, the half shafts are fine

I am suspecting the same, and agree about the suspension part of it. What had me wondering though why the drive shaft and not one of the half shaft ? Those are more prone to break due to wheel hop. |

Out of curiosity, where did the failure occur? U-joint, diff, or snapping the actual shaft? Did it damage anything else?

If it's really just the driveshaft and nothing else on either end, it's only ~$600. Too bad you have the DCT, I have a spare drive shaft sitting in my closet (the longer one).

WELCOME TO THE CLUB!
Mine broke while flooring it driving at 30mph, very odd time to break. I'm sure the 300+ 1/4 mile passes and lots of wheel hop contributed to my break over time. Mine broke at the CV joint that goes into the diff. You don't hear about this failure too much, so I chalked it up to a fluke. I took a gamble and bought a used drive shaft for $230 shipped. Been holding fine thus far, I have at least 50-100 passes on this one. I still haven't broke an axle yet, but I'm planning on it. Trying to source some used axles to send over to DSS preemptively.

1/4 mile runs are definately hard on these cars when you increase torque so much. Driveline flex and wheel hop need to be reduced if you want to continue your 1/4 mile charges: stiffer subframe bushings (m3 at least), differential bushings (at the same time to reduce duplicate labor), m3 rear links and MR rear toe arms. Then your car will be better equipped to handle that torque at the track.

Damn that sucks. Now I'm wondering if I should make my IS Cobb stage 2+. I was thinking about buying dp and upgrade my fmic this week. Now I don't know if I want to do it.

It has as much to do with driving style as power/tq! As some has pointed out the shafts does not break by tq's alone but rather powerful jolts at the crank. I run 650 wtq without a problem but do not run 1/4 miles or races from standstill, this is what shocks stuff to breaking.
However increasing power will always put more stress on your car but that is nothing new. Also, See how many run FBO with no problems to drivetrain.. //Johmei

Sorry didn't see your sig but looked in your profile/garage which stated Cobb. Nice looking E90 though in the garage. Love the VMR! =)
