Everyone else in the whole area knows the rules and sticks to them, why should this guy get away with it? There are probably people that have caravans and pay for them to be stored elsewhere in order to obey the restrictive covenants and uphold the value of the area, they are probably thinking its ok to stick them on the road now.

If this brings down the feel of the area and adversely affects the value of my property - it would be negligent of me NOT to take action.

Chris,you could always try the 'anonymous' bluff letter.

Dear Resident,

It has been brought to our attention that a number of residents on the estate are contravening the restrictive covenants that are in place on the properties that form the estate.

1. The covenant that you are contravening covers the storage of motorhomes/ caravan/s on your property.

We are writing to all residents who are in contravention of any of these covenants,to allow the residents time to comply with the restrictive covenants that are in place on properties that form the estate.

The time period is 14 days from the date of this letter,non compliance will result in legal action.

Your best bet to start with is maybe to get a solicitor to write to them on your behalf, or on behalf of 'residents' (no names of course) reminding them of the convenant etc and outlining the penalties etc.

You can get copies of the title deeds to that and any property for £4 from the Land Registry website, it will tell you everything you need to know about THAT property. (title,owners, cost, lender, plans, convenants,etc. you might find something interesting that you didn't know about too, like it might not even be his house)

It might cost you £100 tops for a quick chat with a solicitor and & well written single letter. (my missus is a lawyer)

Does what you have from the Land Registry give you the details of the originator/s of the covenants?

Definitely put the details from the LR in with the letter,as it adds a LOT of weight to the contents of the anonymous letter.

It will for sure have details of the convenants, usually agreed between the original landowner at the time of sale of the plots to the builder.

That will all add weight to the letter.

It doesn't have to involve the originator either, we have 300 year old covenants on our land, they can be passed with title over time but with certain restirctions.

It helps if the convenant has been properly registered (since 1975)

I complete.y agree with the restrictive covenants and people flouting them. I love America where Residents Associations wield a lot of power and aren't afraid to wield them. Oft times, they can be draconian in their wielding of power - but the fear keeps folks in line and I'm talking about issues like mowing of laws, making sure trash isn't piled too high, trash isn't put out too early, house front is properly and correctly maintained, not too may cars parked on the road outside your home etc. etc. it's scary, but it means consistency and ensures everyone obeys.

It frustrates me when in the UK I see people flouting these covenants, so the OP has my personal sympathy. But I think it's about who will enforce them and how which mans floaters feel safe to do so.

Just to clarify - I called him a scumbag because he's blatantly flouting the restrictive covenants in place on the property not because I have a hatred of all caravans/motorhomes and their owners.

And Dar2008 - I appreciate your concerns about my mental well-being but rest assured I am not staring through a gap in my curtains all day long strumming my fingers and plotting my revenge...........yet.....

This isn't really about caravans, its about covenants. I'm not allowed to tarmac over the bit of grass next to my house and turn it into a driveway, as much as I'd like to - so why should he be allowed to break the rules?
I'm not a fan of the 'oh well, can't be bothered to do anything about it' attitude that is endemic in this country, so I'm off to a solicitor's next week - we'll see what happens...

Lol no, unless you keep them in front of your house, to your neighbour's annoyance, when there is a restrictive covenant in place specifically forbidding that....then in that case - yes.
