330i coils
i read a thread recently about bmw changing coils on these cars but i cant find it now. i called dealer today and he said if you have a problem with misfiring etc bmw will change all coil packs and plugs as goodwill gesture provided the car has full bmw service history. I find it a bit strong that this condition is attached as the suspect parts were fitted in the first place and i dont see what difference it makes provided the car is fitted with the original coils and the plugs are the correct type/ make.

it appears to be only the earlier cars as they upgraded the coils presumably as they had so many failing

Acerboo do you need to get yours done? if BMW wont honour it, then the Bosch coils are £27 inc vat and if you feel the need to change the plugs then BM parts department charge £9 per plug.
If you have diagnostics then it will show up on which cylinders were misfiring. Regards. |

Anyone know what age/build of 330i's this affects?
Just wondering if I should be enquiring about my 57-plate (July 2007 build IIRC) e90 330i...

Mine is an early N53 engine (dec 07) 330i and the coils were done FOC at the time of a service this summer. I told them they had all been done in the spring of 2011 - after they had tortuously failed one by one - they said to change them again anyway as it was a new part. This suggests it was a part changed post spring '11.
I thought the older engines had less of this - early N53's certainly suffered, though in my case I have never had one of the replaced coils fail - from the original replacement or the recent lot. Indeed I was just reflecting that nothing had gone wrong in the 30k miles since about April 2011 when I had the last of the issues, when the PDC failed the other day ![]() |

I've just had my second set of six coils FOC from BMW on my 2009 N53 325i.
First set were done in April this year after the car started misfiring, so I hoped that was it fixed, but same misfire came back last weekend and they fitted another set under the 'campaign'. Dealer didn't seem surprised and I suspect they do a lot of these.

on older cars the coil was always fitted to the side of the engine and in relatively cool air, im sure one of the problems with these coil packs is that sit on top of the engine hidden under a cover so are getting cooked (may be wrong!)
