Well, I think people assume that if you have something that's a "status" brand that you're like that. My last real car before getting a job with a company car was a Porsche 944; I think that that actually hurt my ability to meet and chat with new people if they saw the car, they thought I was "aspiring to a real Porsche" or something. But if I'd had an Accord or something they would have thought I was just a normal guy or whatever.

The funny thing is I finally broke down and bought my 335 because it was so painful driving nothing but company cars (2x Impalas, then a Fusion) and I'm not getting that same reaction for some reason. The 335 is a better car in just about every way except the 944 is much better at causing pain to rear seat passengers and is possibly a little more nimble, the 335 cost 4x as much (for me to buy at least) and is in much better shape cosmetically, but for some reason my friends are all just happy that I got something I like and think it's a great looking car. Do Porsche owners really have that much worse a rep among the GP than BMW owners?

NB: I'm not of the "status" that I can afford either a new Porsche or a new BMW.

Couldn't agree more. Why else would leasing be so successful here in the USA, but not elsewhere?

Lately if you leave the USA, you lose status when you go to spend US dollars abroad. I've been to third world countries, and when going to the typical places we go here, it costs the same or more when the local currency is converted from our dollars.

If I were delivering pizzas, I would want to have fun doing it, so why not drive my fave car and tool around and enjoy myself while doing it?

Cheers to the sensible driver making some money and having fun while doing it! FTW!!!

One of my friends is a part owner of a Ramuntos Pizza here in VT and the other day he was telling me how he had to run out on a quick delivery in his BRAND NEW M3 that just came in from order earlier that week... Gotta do what you gotta do...

On a side note, I am a server part time while in school and often get interesting or confused looks by fellow employees and customers for what I drive. People think im broke because im serving tables at a restaurant... In reality I make more in the 15-25 hours a week than I would if I worked a full time job at 10-15 an hour...

how can you "almost guarantee" ??

My friend is a pizza delivery guy and at the moment he delivers in his brand new red 2013 Mustang he just bought with the money he makes from his job.. don't be so quick to judge, not everyone is in the same situation as say.. you for example.

It looks like it could be an 07 non sport/non premium 335i. I bought one with 40k miles 2 years ago for $17k. They can be had for $15k now. Think about it. Almost anyone with a job can buy one.
Now, the thing that comes to my mind when I see this is respect. It could very well have been someone with a good paying job that got laid off and decided to actually go out and take a job vs sitting at home and letting the government pay for that car. It may not be seen as the most desirable job for anyone on this forum, but at least it's a job. And who knows? Maybe he/she makes good money delivering and enjoys doing it.

It's unrational to drive a 16mpg car and rack up miles on a semi-expensive vehicle, just to make a little over $5 an hour after taxes +tips. The only instance in which the driver actually paid for the car is if it's the manager. Financially, it is uncanny to own a premium vehicle ($20k is a lot for a car), rent an apartment, have insurance, ect ect ect while working a minumum wage job. I'm not judging at all, and kudos to your friend for doing that. Still a bad financial decision to devote such a high % of your monthly income to car payments.

Part time delivery driver here. When my '00 TL is in the shop the 335 comes out to play. Totally reasonable that I get to spend my time driving my car I'm paying for, while getting paid for it. I respect the dude. Sucks they make him put the sign on his car, though.

Also, I'm not sure about the $5/hr estimate. Obviously it depends on the economic status of the area you deliver to along with the price level of the store you deliver for, but no driver is taking home less than 10-15/hr. Personally, my hourly plus tips averages between $28-$35/hr before taxes, certainly no pittance.

im sure the OP was joking about this post but if not, its just a 335, A 3 SERIES! No need to act like hes driving a supercar around delivering pizza. Even if he was delivering pizza in a ferrari, maybe you should stop him and talk to him because hes obviously doing something right. Unless you talk to the driver dont jump to conclusions. he might be driving his dads car until he makes enough money to buy a car, or hes paying for it himself, or his parents bought the car and he still is going to need money, maybe someone in his family passed away and left him the car. you just never know

Just to play devil's advocate for a moment. And before I make my points I want to certainly agree with the general consensus that we shouldn't judge others based on mere appearances. Now that said, the BMW enthusiast within me finds something deeply wrong about a 335i being used as a pizza delivery car. One, BMW is currently the premier luxury auto maker in the world based on sales.

Owning a BMW is supposed to convey a sense of status upon its owner, like it or not, that's simply a marketing reality. The BMW roundel is a symbol of luxury, performance and, yes, status. That was a $40k-plus car when it was brand new. Unless they're delivering a little blow along with that pie, delivery boys aren't supposed to be driving $40k-plus cars.

Two, the fact that a 335i is being used as a pizza delivery car means that it is now in the same ranks as every generic-looking POS Jap-import car over the past 25 years that you've seen every other pizza delivery boy driving. In other words, 1991 Toyota Corolla is now = 2007 BMW 335i.

Third, just like OP indicated, as someone who drives an E9x, I don't want to be associated with pizza delivery boys. I make a helluva lot more money than a delivery boy does and for us to drive similar vehicles does nothing to separate me from him on the socio-economic ladder.

However, the reality is this: just about any mass-produced vehicle at some point in its lifecycle is going to become available to Joe Public. And I've seen just about every kind of car imaginable used as pizza delivery cars: Mercedes, BMW, C4 Corvettes, every GM make you can name, and almost every Jap car ever built--including 90s Nissan 300ZXs.

The only way you're ever going to be able to avoid seeing your car being used to deliver pizzas is if your car is something that doesn't depreciate to the point that a Uncle Bob, with his bad credit, can't get his hands on one at a Buy-Here, Pay-Here. Sadly, that eliminates almost every BMW ever made with the exception of the newer M-cars. But give them another 5 years or so and they too will wind up on Fast Eddie's Used Car lot.

OP, my suggestion if you want to avoid this embarrassment again is to move on up to something truly rare and truly exotic: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Maserati, etc. Regardless of how old they are, they will always be too rare and too expensive to ever wind up on the lot of Everybody Rides Auto Sales across the street from the local bail bondsman.

Yes, I hate seeing such a great car being used this way, but that's the reality of how saturated the market is with BMWs right now. If you've got a job, chances are you can afford one.
