From a 3 to a 3...

From a Mazda 3 to a BMW 3, that is.

I just got rid of my beloved Mazda 3 and moved onto a CPO 2009 e92 328i X-drive. In my price range, I was torn between that or 2008-ish 335i X-drive. But all the 335s that I found were out of warranty. Given the stories I've read about the HPFP, and given the fact that I'd be dealing with a car with almost double the miles and a more complex engine in general, I decided to go with the CPO 328. Besides, even the 328 represents a substantial boost in improvement over the Mazda 3.

I have to say, after ten years of driving nothing but four cylinder engines, it's nice to get back to a six. Even without any mods, it sounds SO throaty.

Anyway, I thought I'd stop in and say hello with a few pics.

I've never been very big on mods. After all, most mods for cars in the Mazda 3 range end up making the vehicle look, well...a little too ricey. But I have to say, after browsing the forums here, there seem to be a lot of classy mods to choose from. I've already picked up the M3-style trunk lip spoiler from JBSPEED, and I've got my eye on the M-tech style rear bumper from JGMODS.

Being Space Gray, I'm also looking for some nice accent colors. Right now I'm thinking about painting the calipers red and grabbing the red RPI ram scoops. Nothing too flashy.

In the end, I think the biggest change I'd love to make is to change out the wheels, get rid of the run-flats, and lower the stance. I can not believe how much more aggressive the car looks when lowered. I'd probably stay away from coilovers, and likely wouldn't lower it too much. From what I've seen so far, and given the compromises I'm willing to make, I'm thinking a Bilstein and Eibach combo is probably ideal for me. But, that's a ways down the line for me. For now, I'll just drool at everyone else's pics.

You want to avoid being ricey, but your first mod is going to be to paint your calipers red?

Sorry but that makes zero sense.

To me, ricey-ness is something that sits on a spectrum and has a cumulative effect. In my mind, if I were to black out the windows, add some giant K&N and Magnaflow stickers, get colored rims and color-matched mirrors and paint the calipers, well then that'd be ricey to me.

I'm just looking to add a little touch of accent color to the gray. Besides, with stock rims, I doubt even the brightest red will stand out very well at all.
