European Delivery - Aug 6, 2007 - 335i Coupe

August 6th couldn't come soon enough. I placed my order for my 335i Coupe back in early March to be delivered in Munich (about 5 months in advance). Because my wife is a college professor whose vacation schedule is limited to the short gap between the end of the summer term and the beginning of the fall semester, we weren't flexible and therefore had to request a date WAY in advance.

I survived the 150 day wait and finally we headed off to Munich. Here is a picture of me before the 9.5 hour direct flight to Munich from my home town of Fort Myers.

(FYI, I graduated from the University of Florida in 2006, after the first NCAA Championship, but before the consecutive thrashings of Ohio State. My t-shirt reads: BUCKEYES Somebody has to be Second Place)
We chose to pay full price for two non-stop tickets via LTU because the savings from the Lufthansa 2-for-1 deal wasn't worth making 2 stops. In addition, the 2-for-1 offer does not apply to flights operated by other airlines and Lufthansa does not fly into Fort Myers, so we would have had to pay full price for a round-trip flight to Charlotte or NYC.

We got to Munich on Saturday morning and took the S-bahn to the city center (Marienplatz), just before the famous Glockenspiel chimed. It was behind scaffolding, so that sucked. After dragging our luggage for a couple of blocks we checked into our hotel. We did Mike's Bike Tours, which you MUST do if you go, and saw all the sights which were explained by Will, our comedic yet informative guide. I don't want to bore you with random shots of Munich, you'll get to experience them for yourself when you go. Below are shots of cars I saw while on the tour:
Audi A5 (Haven't yet seen one in the U.S.):

Porsche GT3 (I also saw the orange one, but I wasn't fast enough with my camera):

BMW Hydrogen7 (It only makes about 200HP, but I guess there's only a handful of them around. I am not an environmentalist, but if we can lessen our dependence on foreign oil, while maintaining the performance standards we are accustomed to, I'm all for this research):

Audi R8 (Again I was slow getting the camera, but you can just see the left rear of the car in the center of the pic):

On with the ED!
On the way to the delivery center, we saw BMW HQÖ

Ö and the future home of the BMW museum (scheduled to open in the Spring of 2008)

We were warmly greeted when we arrived at the delivery center and were cordially invited to have something to eat in the bistro. We hadn't eaten lunch yet so we ate sandwiches and drank Coke Light, thinking this would probably be our most expensive meal in Munich!

Well, the delivery specialist (I canít remember his name for the life of me, I think it was Sivy or something), came up and went through all the paperwork with us and he handed me the key while my wife and I toasted with champagne. We left the bistro with full bellies, compliments of BMW. If I had known it was free I would have gorged myself there for hours!

Into the garage we went, and this is what I saw:

I was taught all the bells and whistles that are installed on my vehicle, I mean EVERY button, with the exception of disabling DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), I had to look that one up!

After I was an expert at pushing buttons, it was time to go. As you can tell from the expression on my face, I was only a little excited!

I drove this baby through Munich back to our hotel to load it up with all of our luggage, with the help of my TomTom Go910. I went for the $400 portable GPS unit rather than the $2,100 factory option. The inner city roadways were surprisingly easy to drive on and navigate through. Once we were all packed up we headed off to Oberammergau, where we stayed at the Hotel Alte Post. Here are some shots I took along the way:

On the unrestricted portions of the autobahn, I was able to get the car up to 151mph (243kph). I was told not to go above 4,500 rpm for extended periods of time so my short bursts of excessive engine speeds were limited to just a few attempts, plus my wife wasnít thrilled about the idea. I was trying to chase down a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, which tops out at about 180mph, so it was impossible. It was a weird feeling when it stopped going faster, kind of like putting it on cruise control. The engine didnít bump, it just stopped accelerating. Achieving these speeds on the autobahn wasnít scary at all; the roads were smooth and traffic flowed nicely. In Germany, you get as far to the right as possible if you arenít making a pass so that idiots like me can move unimpeded. When other cars are moving at speeds comparable to you, you can get very comfortable with cruising at 120mph.

With the exception of the rain, it was an awesome trip. It rained half the time we were there, but that is to be expected in a place that gets about 15 days of rain per month. Oh yeah and one day the high was 52 degrees, in AUGUST (so much for global warming)! My last gripe: I had to give up my new car to E. H. Harms for shipment to the U.S. The fake smile in this pic tells you just how happy I was.

And this is my wife waving good bye:

Here is my favorite picture from the whole trip:

Would I do it again? Absolutely! I put about 320 miles on the car, at about 22mpg, which was less than 1 tankís worth of gas, so I never had to fill up. At about $8.00/gallon it was a good thing they gave me a full tank of gas at delivery! We spent about $3,800 on plane tickets, lodging, and souvenirs, which was offset by the $2,855 discount by picking the car up in Germany. The food was interesting and different from what weíre used to, but my super-picky wife didnít starve. Also, the people of Germany were very warm and friendly (with the exception of the service workers in Munich) and not as stinky as you might think. The front desk people like to let you know when you are wrong and servers can be very grumpy. Aside from staying in Munich and driving ridiculously fast on the autobahn, we visited the major Bavarian castles (Neuschwanstien [pictured above], Hohenschwangau, and Linderhof) and various museums.

Thanks for reading through my lengthy European Delivery write up and let me know what you think!

Irv, don't worry about it; the next one I buy will definitely be through you! I didn't find out about your service until it was too late, otherwise this one would have been yours as well! Please send me some info on BMWCCA and does any know that what my delivery specialist's name is for sure?

Great Write up......

The name of the delivery person will be printed on one of your delivery papers. The one that you signed saying you took delivery of the car with all the promised eqipment.

I think you can even save more next time if you can get the car $1K over ED invoice price....

Looks like you guys had a great time. I'm definitely looking forward to my trip.

Did you happen to see a black E92 with Coral sitting in the corner at the delivery center gathering dust? If so that's probably mine.

No, I didn't notice yours there, there were about 25 e92s in the garage, along with a couple hundred other models! You'll walk by it on your way back to the delivery office.

How long are you going to be there? I wish I could have stayed a little longer (enough time to get to the Nurnburgring and back), though I think I had seen just enough of Munich. Do you plan on staying in Germany, or will you check out some other counties as well?

Just make sure you bring a jacket, umbrella, and plenty of fresh socks, because IT GON' RAIN!

Great photos and good report. Liked the side-by-side views of your E92 and its twin colored E93 at Harms. Do you have a photo showing more of both cars together? By the way I believe the building you ID as a future BMW museum is actually the BMW Welt where deliveries will be originating from after mid October. Not sure if the new auto museum will be attached or end up as a separate building but if I recall correctly it will follow by some months the opening of the Welt. Also the 25 E92's and other cars in the garage you walked by on the way to the ED Center are some type of demos that BMW employees get to drive. Apparently they are not available for sale and constitute some type of test fleet.

Great write up, It's almost enough for me to forgive you for that T-shirt.

I've been to Munich before becoming a BMW owner, I agree Mike's bike tours are a must! I was a college kid without a job when I went back in 1997, so the only car I took on the autobahn I borrowed from a friend and it topped off at like 80 mph 8). I would love to do ED someday, what an experience!

We are going to be there from Sept.8th through the 16th. I was planning to go to the nurburgring but, not being able to drive on it I know I'd be a little let down. So, I'm planning to stop by a few of the tuning shops.

We're spending about half the trip in Munich before we get the car and the other half in Berchtesgaden/Salzburg. It looks like there is quite a bit to do in the Salzburg area so, it should be fun.

How many days were you guys there? It looks like you got to do a good bit of stuff.

We left Ft. Myers on Aug 3 and arrived in Deutschland in the morning of the 4th. We caught the 7:00am flight back to Ft. Myers on the 11th and arrived that same afternoon. The whole trip was about 9 days, including flying, but we only really spent 7 days in Germany
