2008 BMW 328i  [5.00]
"Dealer Recommended" Maintenance

I've had my CPO 2008 E92 328i for about a year now, and it seems like I am overdue for a few maintenance issues. I have about 32k miles on it (got it with about 18k)

My service adviser at the stealership is telling me that I need to do a:
1. Fuel injection + induction cleaning
2. Power steering fluid replacement
3. Rear differential fluid

This totals to a whopping $638, which I did not see coming at all. I expected to do regular maintenance on the first car that I am paying for, but I did not know it would cost this much.

Are these easy fixes that I can go to an independent BMW/German car mechanic for? How closely should I follow the maintenance schedule that the dealership is telling me? I found a revised version of the old school maintenance schedule, but it is for 335i's.

If you can't tell, I'm kind of a n00b, so any advice would be much appreciated.

At 30k:
Rear diff
Manual transmission fluid
Power steering
For AWD, front diff and xfer case.

I dont know about the fuel injection and induction cleaning.

A bmw indy shop can do that stuff.

Follow Mike Miller's guide if you want your car to do a bazillion miles.

For item 1, pour techron fuel injector cleaner into gas tank, once every 6,000 -10,000 miles. For item 2, wait until 75,000 miles. Item 3, wait until 100,000 miles. There, I just saved you lots of $$$ and this will only cost you about $10.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

Have you ever heard of problems with differential or power steering with less miles than that? Actually, I never heard of any problems with differentials at any mileage. If you can show me one example then I will stay quiet. (Not sure for how long).

Come to think of it, since power steering is a very easy DIY (using the turkey baster method) then change it every 50k.

The point of doing them so often is so they never have to be replaced. But if you wait too long with the differential you run into the same problem of automatic transmission fluid at high mileage.

I definitely believe in changing the trans fluid. Actually, ALL fluids need to be replaced at some point. But the differential fluid, never heard of any problems at ANY mileage. Not that I wouldn't change that too, but the OP has such low miles he will probably get rid of the car before he hits 60k!

There are 2 CPO in my garage.
328I - 2007 CPO, bought in 2010 @ 30,000 miles.
Now it is 55,000 miles and there is no instruction to do such type of service.
So far I'm following what the dysplay tells, in fact I replace engine oil yearly.

328I - 2009 CPO, bought in 2011 @ 19,000miles
Now it is 33,000, also no instruction to such type of service.
Only replaced tyres and oil.

You probably drive lots of miles to receive these type of service recommendations.
