Morel Hybrid 402 (2 way component)

Does anybody have any experience with the new component set released by Morel this year: Morel Hybrid 402 (2 way component set)? Does it sound better/different? Is it more like a "marketing" upgrade or it is actually better than Hybrid Ovation II ?

The link to the new speakers is: http://www.morelhifi.com/car-audio/hybrid-ovation-ii/hybrid-2-way-2

Note: I am interested in having them in a 335i sedan among other replacements of the audio components.

unless you got some audiophile ears, the improvement or difference between the two may be inaudible. plus, there are other factors such as what amp & dsp you plan on using. vp electricity may be your best bet in having experience with both of these.

The upgrade path I would like to follow is the following - it starts from 2009 335i sedan (e90) HiFi stereo:

1. Amp upgrade to JL XD600/6
2. Under seats woofers upgrade to SWS 8x / 8s / 8xi - I need to study more which version is more suitable
3. Front door speakers/tweeters to Morel Hybrid Ovation II or the new Morel Hybrid 402 released this year.

Note: I am also open to suggestions for different options.

Given that this speaker really hadn't been changed in seven years or more, I hope they didn't do it for "marketing". When they added the "II"" onto it around 3 years ago, they changed the passive crossover to the smaller plastic-housing unit.

The Hybrid's biggest difference is again the passive crossover. Morel has reworked all their passives with insights gleaned from their "Fat Lady" home speaker project.

Instead of series resistance used for tweeter attenuation, Zobel networks are used.

Instead of 12/12 second order slopes, the new crossover uses 12dB second-order low-pass and 18dB third-order high-pass filters. I suspect the midrange is already rolling off at 6dB/octave at the crossover point (which is around 400 cycles higher than before, about a half-octave), so the acoustic result is symmetrical 18dB/octave slopes.

The combination of the steeper highpass filter slope and the upgraded tweeter results inless distortion around the crossover point with loud midrange notes.

If you look at the two passives side-by-side, they are very different and the 402 has around 2X as many components on the board.

Supposedly, the tweeter is an upgraded version of the MT-23 used in the Elate series up until this year.

The depth is a couple of mm less - with the explosion over the last few years in neodymium prices (Google "neodymium prices" and click on Images to see the hockey-stick graphs) - they seem to have taken some out. They hoped to make them shallower to fit in more locations, but they did not shave off nearly enough for them to fit into an E92, I'm afraid.

Just me but after doing it, I would go with 1. amp upgrade (JL XD600/6), 2. Front door speakers/tweethers (Morel HO II), 3. Underseat woofers upgrade to Jehnert 200 mm. PS: I was pretty happy after 2. 3. is the icing on the cake.
