What's my 335i really worth?

It's hard to tell using kbb.

It's a 2008 335i sedan, 21,500 miles, silver on black. Cpo until 2014, maintenance ends next month.

Pretty much all options: nav, sport package, satellite radio, cold weather, etc. Great condition.

Any ideas?

Try using Nadas website they are similar to kbb then compare the prices kbb gives with nada. I know in today's economy its hard to judge what a car is worth even with kbb. These websites dont take into account if a car is rare or not. For instance red on white manual tranny is hard to find versus a silver on black automatic transmission something easier to find. Dealerships know this and price the cars accordingly

KBB also does not account for your CPO. Dealers in actuality jack prices way up if a car is CPO'd, so that's extra for your worth. You will still be in the KBB ball-part if you want to sell, however. Everyone seems to use it as a standard. The one thing I'd recommend is looking at a BMW dealership near you and seeing what prices they're charging for similarly-optioned/mileaged cars as yours, and that'll be your best estimate.

Good ideas but your off when you say they don't account for CPO there is an option for CPO cars...

Kbb threw me off, because in July it was saying my car was worth $28,500 trade in, then all of a sudden in August it dropped to like $25,000 trade in value. Private party was still higher.

Same settings, condition, etc - maybe just 800 more miles.

Did I miss something? Anything in july that dropped prices this much? The new 3 has been out for a while now.

Why doesn't anyone on here use Edmunds TMV? They track actual transactions, not asking prices like KBB...

Do a search for vehicles very similar to yours on ebay including dealer listings. Then add them all to your watch list. Then just go back and review your watch list whenever you want and you will see what each sold or did not sell for as the auctions end. I have found this approach very accurate.

This ^^^

I cross reference it between Edmunds, KBB, NADA, and EBay dealer listings. Have used this for several cars in the past and it's been within ~$500.

I find Edmunds though to be the most realistic in value.

The significant price drop is a lot of factors.
How much inventory?
Demand for that model?
If a newer model came out?
Where you are?
BMW running specials.

In my area BMW is running specials on 2009 lease returns. This affects the values of 2008 cars.

how do they track transactions outside of dealers? when im paying cash for a car and saving on taxes which would just be a retail price anyway

Good point Techwhiz. We're looking to buy an CPO E93 lease return. Dealer is only giving me $20k for trade in.

I posted my 2008 E90 CPO with only 44k miles without much inquiries from buyers. I'm only asking $23300 for a great car. What gives??

I feel you. I dumped my 335i coupe 2008 navi, sports, premium, first and only owner for 22.5k. Mines a coupe too, I know the sedans are much cheaper because they experience a pretty big refresh with the 2009 model, new lights front and rear. 20k doesn't seem so horrible from the dealer, does your state allow your trade in to go towards cap reduction?

I've sold my previous cars fairly quickly (all less than 30 days) on auto trader. Although I look at edmunds/kbb and the like, I usually go by similar cars in my areas (private and dealerships) and go from there. I tend to price them somewhere in the middle (not the highest and not the lowest) and seems to work out great. As someone stated, you have to really look at the cars in YOUR OWN AREA as prices do vary across the states. But probably one of the biggest reason (IMO) why I've sold them fairly quickly is because they all had MANUAL transmissions. Sure, there will be less people looking for manuals, but for those who really want one....there's really not many around. Hence, supply and demand is definitely on the side of the seller when it comes to 6MT.

I just bought a 2009 White 335i M sport and premium pkg with 40,000mi in extremely clean condition for $22,500 (private seller). The car had been listed for at least 5 months at $26,000 with no takers.

There is a 2008 CPO that has been listed at $23k (private owner) since early this year in my area, I was not interested because I wanted one with the newer body style.

If I had to guess, you could probably move the car in a reasonable length of time at $20k.

My experience has been that private party cars under $10k can sell like hot cakes, but once you cross over $15k, you will be sitting on the car for a looong time if you try to sell it yourself. My last BMW wound up going to carmax because I could not sell it in time.

Good luck.
