The steering wheel goes in, out, up, down, what else do you want it to do? What type of position are you trying to achieve. Its not a semi and the steering column can not come from the floor in a vertical manner

the problem that I have is that I can't seem to sit far enough away from the pedals that my legs aren't all scrunched up and still close enough to the steering wheel. I can mitigate it somewhat by lowering the steering wheel, but then I can't see the directional indicators or the tops of the gauges. I'm not particularly disproportionate either - if anything my arms are a little bit longer than average for my height.
I know I'm being picky but the car is so damn near perfect in every other respect... |

Your wrists should sit on top of the steering wheel when you stretch your hands out.
Perhaps your seat is recline too far back? 6 foot isn't too deviant from the average height.

I didn't think so either. Seat back is nearly vertical and I still feel too close to the pedals and yet I can't rest my wrist on the top of the wheel without pulling my shoulder off the back of the seat. Unfortunately this seems to be common with nearly all new cars, I expected BMW to have a better range of adjustment though.
