I looked at that plate when I swapped struts, it's more like 1/8" inch and I doubt removing it would make much difference as far as looks. However it did look like it was there for a good reason, distributing load & reinforcing around the unibody at that point so I left it in.

What about the strut top hat? Is there a size difference between i and xi?
