335 vs rx7

So I had a little run into last model year of rx7, definitely turbo as i heard bov, my car is stock (for not at least) doing around 50mph, I shift into ds and off we go, I put around 3-4 car lengths on him, wth? Are they supposed to be faster?

They are not really that fast on stock turbos. 2 of my buddies have them, 1 is on stock turbos, with exhaust and intake. I beat him easily, but the one with built motor and big single turbo. Yea he gets me, however RX-7's are amazing when it comes to handling. All these runs were done in my previous cars.

Most RX-7s are not stock though. There are a few around here that will spank even Shiv's ST car. They have turbo LSX swaps in them and are stupid fast.

I went to a meet last night and saw a few big ST RX-7s.

The nastiest thing ive seen was an S2K with a 2JZ. Nearly spanked a built Z06

2JZ in a S2K huh? Was it a ST 2JZ? I bet that's pretty sick!

Idk the specifics tbh. Just know he had a 2JZ under the hood. Most of the other cars were rice-a-roni's, but there were a few slick cars.

I owned a completely stock rx7, it had 255hp, so no match for a 335i, however after a single turbo conversion, 550hp and 2700 lbs. it was pretty damn quick.

X...

I've always loved rx-7s. Light, quick and very mod able.

RX7s are nice little cars. The rotary engine in the RX8 always baffled me. Can you even "build" a rotary engine? You cant like bore/cam/headwork a rotary engine, right? Seems like they were trying to be clever, and it fell on their face...

There's several different port jobs you can do to a rotary depending on the level of streetability you would like. It's similar to a 2 stroke where you port a cylinder port wider would be similar to porting a head of a 4 stroke and then you can open it up or down on the intake and exhaust to change timing and overlap similar to adding a higher duration cam. Although doing this on a rotary isn't as easy. You can get a 13B to about 200HP NA with a street port and 320+ with a racing peripheral port setup. Not sure what they've gotten out of the renesis engine after porting I would guess closer to 285 but haven't heard of too many shops even touching that engine.

Seems like its not worth it Not that much power, and im sure your giving up a lot of streetability. How does forced induction work with an engine like this?

Rotary's have a love hate relationship with boost. They love it until the engine instantly blows an apex seal which is about the equiv to a head gasket except they have 3 of them and it only takes one to make a mess. They are actually very simple engines and can produce high amounts of power but it only takes on little hiccup to ruin your day so tuning has to be very careful and monitoring your engine is vital, always good gas, keep the coolant temps low as the stock cooling system is junk and has to be replaced. I'd say normal reliability is in the 300-400 range after that it's a matter of time each person has a different experience but from what I've seen almost all of them have had a rebuild at some point. And on the down side 10MPG is in the norm. Even RX8 owners have reported only getting 18MPG on the highway stock.

As far as streetability goes they get very temperamental. However, in a pure "track car" mindset rotarys can be goddamned monsters. A 4 rotor with a big turbo is the kind of things legends are made of

I had an RX7 with standard engine and turbos, but with an Apexi ECU and some time on a rr with a good tuner. Had her pushing out 300rwhp, although with twin turbos the boost was pretty spikey as the second one come on at about 4k revs!

I'd say for in gear performance my 335i would be similar but the delivery of power from standstill in the RX felt more brutal, and the handling was way better. Got through a lot of petrol though...
