PSA: Fuel Injectors

All -

PSA = Public Service Announcement

I've gained an incredible amount of knowledge and value from being on this board, I finally may have a something of value to return to the greater good.

I have a 2009 335i (N54) E92 with 54K miles. About 2 months ago I noticed a rough idle at start, poor gas mileage and overall poor performance. The rough idle was intermittent so I was hesitant to take it to the dealership, especially if I couldn't recreate the issue. The "check engine" light finally went on and i promptly scheduled an appointment at the dealership. After a few hours i was called by by the SA and he told me I needed to have all my fuel injectors replaced. You can imagine my surprise and disgust. A 3500 dollar expense just after my factory warranty went out. I went to the dealership to discuss and first talked to the Shop Manager and I asked him how can this be. i've performed scheduled maintenance, i've ALWAYS put premium gas in the car. Im shocked and to be honest, pissed! He said that there have been SEVERAL issues with the injectors on the N54 engines. Apparently, the manufacturer of the injectors used suspect material which has caused them to leak, misfire and other issues. BMW has not recalled them because they do work and the problem isnt widespread but its significant. What metrics must be met to issue a recall??? Anyway, I then asked the Service manager (not shop manager) what can be done, how can this happen? etc. He said that since im within the TIME portion of the warranty, BMW will, on some occasions, fix the problem at no charge calling it a "Good Faith" deal or something. I didnt care what they called it, just that it got done. And alas, BMW covered all the work, and parts. I got brand new injectors, plugs and other goodies from this.

The car now runs incredible, like new even. responsive, and smooth. Im thrilled with the performance now and happy to have the car for several more years. (unless i pull the trigger on that M3 sooner).

Do with this information as you may. Just thought Id share. But if i were you, id get my injectors diagnosed or replaced.

Just had all 6 of my injectors replaced as well. I was experiencing rough starts almost every day, and upon checking my plugs it looked like two of the injectors may have been leaking. I asked my SA to look into it and he replaced them all for me, as well as all the spark plugs. I'm still under the factory warranty, but good to know they took care of you.

I thought there was a recall for injectors but it only affected certain model dates?

good to hear you were taken care of, i dont care how deep ones pockets are, a 3.5k car problem is bad news...at the same time, i think its pretty rare to have all 6 injectors go bad at once. People replace injectors all the time, but I rarely see all 6.

yes, but it is specifically related to model year, but the part numbers on the injector.

Could have been that only some of the injectors were actually bad, but all were suspect especially if it is a manufacturing issue. Instead of replacing only the ones that are currently bad, all were replaced to prevent future problems, particularly if the problem with manufacturing has been corrected for the newer injectors.

4 out of the 6 were bad in both bays, it was "suggested" that ALL be replaced at the same time.

gotcha. 1 injector or all 6, good to see it was sorted out. Fueling and ignition is not the strong suit of the n54...

Usually if one injector is bad within the bank, all 3 injectors are changed in that bank.
They pressure test them, and see if they leak over a specific time period, if the pressure drops, its leaky injector and there replaced.

I think this is somewhat old news. There is actually a recall on the injectors and a well documented testing procedure for old injector.

I recently had an injector go on bank 2, so I replaced all three on that bank.

I have noticed on my datalogs that bank 2 fuel trims and A/F ratios are much smoother than prior to the swap.

The bank 1 trims still oscillate up and down comparatively to bank 2.

Going to replace bank 1 injectors very soon as well since my cold start idle is starting to act up.

I only have 50K miles on my 2008 135i, but it looks like the injectors don't last in these cars and create all sorts of headaches from misfires, to rough idle.

Sucks if it's on your own dime.....but only $107 each from Tischer.

Agreed! At least we now have my nice step-by-step DIY on how to code them in yourselves using INPA

Yes.....thanks to you

Too bad I am too intimidated to load it onto my windows 7 laptop.

I hear you have to run it in virtual XP and even then it's still a nightmare to get the drivers to work.
