These engine needs to be pushed hard!
I've had mine for over 1 year with more than 100 000k
No problems! No carbon build up at all!
I floor it probably 10-15 times per day!
Most of my driving occurs on highway!!!

How does burning more fuel result in less build up? Per the other recent threads on this subject, does this have to do with EGR operation and low vs higher revs?

Just trying to separate fact from speculation.

The EGR closes during full fueling - that's a good thing!

This is quite true about diesels. Problem with winter is the traction and everyone on the highway driving like Canadians.

The engine needs loading. I would suspect that the 2 litre diesel has fewer problems since the engine would see higher average load for normal driving.

Flooring 425ft/lbs all the time during city driving isn't best idea either. The real fix is to not have the exhaust gasses recirculated to begin with...

It seems to me that prevention is only half the battle. The latter half would be cleaning/maintenance as some carbon buildup is inevitable unless you truly believe that a vehicle can achieve perfect combustion at all times. I've seen many write ups about the other Diesel engines and cleaning the install manifold using various spirits. Is there a preferred non-take-apart method for our cars?

I've put a deposit down for a 335d and I'm going to be picking it up in 2 weeks, all this carbon stuff is getting me worried..

Even if/when I get the extended warranty, I won't feel safe after 100k miles and I'd like to drive this car into the ground... I just don't want the ground to be 55k miles :/

Flooring it isn't going to help anything. Oil still comes in through the PCV system. It will always come through unless a catch can is made for these cars.

Doesn't matter about the EGR. The carbon build up on these cars comes from a oil control problem. Not just the 335D, but also the N54 and N55 engines. Causing oil to blow through and coat the intercooler and charge piping, gunking up intake valves etc. This problem will be eliminated with the install of an oil catch can

I've also heard em say catch cans don't do that much either (seems to be polarized within the community, could be all speculation) - 335dM, can you speak to this? Have you seen or come across long term results from an FSI engine with a catch can?

I have no experience with fsi engines. But as someone above said, when our car are floored , EGR is close which is a very good thing. Also the regeneration of DPF too is good too at wide open but would significantly be better if we were to add meth injection which would help lower both. EGT and intake temp. and eliminating carbon build up. ( This method is preferred combined with distilled water because when injected it would liberate hot water vapors which will help clean the combustion chamber)
Now! We have a second problem on our cars! Filtration and water separation from fuel. We need extra oil and fuel filtration. Injectors seals failure comes from bad fuel or debris in fuel which could be eliminate by adding a 5-10 Micron secondary fuel filter. At least it would give our injectors some more life to it. Same for oil.

how did you determine you have no carbon build up?

FYI..scuttlebutt is that the X535d's do not have this symptom. Higher load on the engine is speculated as the reason why.
