My son is not allowed to drive "his" BMW to school. It just sits in the driveway and he uses it when he is home from resdience. At school, he takes transit, bikes and walks like most of the other kids.

this is like when my parents gave me an n64 for christmas and didnt give me my first video game for it till my birthday in august..

but ya if i was a parent would prefer my kid had fun went around as his friends do and not have be at risk of an accident especially with the responsibility of others in the car.

I drove mine to school when I attended my University. My college didnt have covered parking at the time and the stalls were cramped. Really does depend on parking availability, lots of students are in a "rush" and could result in door dings or scratches.

You just have to be very careful with where you park and must be willing to walk if necessary to have it in a safe spot. I rarely park between spots. Always try to find an end spot or if its parallel parking then the first or last.

Thats my two cents.

If it's the kind of school where there are lots of students with nice cars, it's probably no big deal. If you're headed to a school like I went to that's in a small, humble town, and the students all drive pretty modest cars, a nice late-model Bimmer may be a vandalism magnet, especially if you keep it clean and park it out away from other cars to avoid door dings.

Other factors I'd consider would be whether or not there's a BMW dealer or good indy shop who will be able to service the car near where you'll be living, and whether you're okay with it sitting out in the elements all the time, probably only being washed at whatever car washes are available in the area.

If you're unsure about taking the car there, is it an option to go without the car for a while and see (a)if you feel like you even need it there, and (b)whether or not you feel comfortable having it there as you get to know the school, the area, etc.?

+1 to all of these.

I had a modded E92 328xi my freshman/sophomore year when I lived on campus. I went to school in a high-end area of south western Virginia and there were plenty of other nice cars on campus. I worried about the same things, but ended up bringing the car with me.

freshman year I made the mistake of sleeping with a girl who had a boyfriend ( I was unaware), and he (frat bro) ended up keying my car. I made sure to always park under a security camera, and he ended up getting caught, arrested, and expelled. One thing I learned quickly at school: it's hard to hide/disguise a modded BMW from people who want to find it. I was lucky in that I was at a small school, and quickly made friends in many different "groups". Everyone knew my car and luckily I didn't have any other issues. I got rid of that after my sophomore year and got an E90 335. Lived right off campus junior/senior year and had my car parked on the street in front of my house. Only issue I had was a drunk freshman kicking my (folded in) mirror. I was sleeping at my girlfriends place, but luckily my roommates caught him right after he did it. I came back and kicked his "mirror" in...

You always have to worry about people who park like shit, and I saw plenty of people sacrifice door dings for parking spaces closer to school. If you're within walking distance and can find either a safe parking lot or friends to park with, I'd recommend doing that. If not, try to find an end or parallel spot, and don't come to campus last minute looking for parking where you'll be stuck with a sketchy spot. Aside from that, try to make friends with other enthusiasts so your car will be well looked after! would suck having a 335 sitting at home!

I had awful luck with the local dealer down there for warranty work. getting them to approve my HPFP recall work was a nightmare, even after I went in with a list of printed codes the car had active relating directly to the recall campaign. Definitely a consideration to make when trying to decide! Depending on what area you're in and the type of people attending your institution, you may also have to worry about vandalism. I saw a number of nice cars get vandalized during random weekends I spent at Virginia Tech with friends.

good luck!

Simple - is reducing the risk of damage, etc. worth all the times you'll be wishing you had it to drive? We can't answer that, but I would take mine.

The fact that you're asking, you obviously know there is some risk. Assess and decide.

I would have taken my e90 to my university when I was studying. I don't know what your university is like but I would still probably take it even if there was some risk.

I took my bmw to a college party and within ten minutes there was a beer can on the trunk. Cars usually get roughed up in college towns bottom line.

When I go to college next year I am NOT taking my car. Why rack up unecessary mileage on the car when the only driving to do on campus is under 30mph? Pointless taking it to college imo (when living on campus of course, commuting is a different story). Its worth the peace of mind that my car is nice and safe at home in the garage.

I had a car on campus every year... It was worth it, basically freedom... I was one of the few freshmen/sophomores that had a car since my school only allowed juniors and seniors to have a car...Although I spent very little time on campus, so if you plan on staying on campus it may not be worth it...

Park far away from other cars. Even if your campus has nice cars it doesn't mean the people know how to drive them...

I'm probably going to be bringing my 335is cross country next semester. I live in Los Angeles, but go to school at Hopkins in Baltimore.

Thank you all for the responses. I've decided to take my Bimmer to school. At the end of the day a car is a depreciating asset so I might as well enjoy it while it's fairly new. Even if that means I might have to park a bit further than other vehicles

I go to UC Santa Barbara and have my 335 here. It's much harder than having it at home due to finding parking in a good spot, cleaning it, and being worried that someone might do something to it. UCSB is one of the biggest party schools in the nation so its kind of a personal decision.

Wouldn't take it.

Lack of good parking (unless you want people ramming their doors into your car), lack of people giving a shit (also drunk people), and no where to wash your car.

I would suck it up and have no car or get a beater for a few years.

for you guys that own a 335i and go to uni how did you afford the car? are you guys 'mature students' i.e. have worked a living and going to uni later on in life..?

in the UK most uni students can't afford even a relatively low cost car! and car insurance for an average 19yr old with a car worth $1000 is probably $3000-4000+ per year
