Honestly YouTube it and there is tons of videos. I wanted the same thing, nice deep time with no drone. I got a magnaflow cat back and left the res, and secondary cats on. Removing the secondary cats will make it a bit louder but only in the higher RPM's from what I am told. I am thinking about doing this. I will dig up a video and post in later.

Of course BMW PE is always a good choice with great sound, PnP installation, and OEM BMW part
For simple muffler swap (using a medium priced muffler) I would recommend either Rogue Engineering Ikon, or Remus as 1st choices, or you could go with Magnaflow (midpipe+muffler system available, or you can simply use the appropriate standalone MF muffler with some welding involved) I have owned/experience with the PE, RE Ikon, & Remus - I would rate them as to sound quality in that order. Since you're not looking for obnoxious sound, don't go with muffler delete, or the AA N52 exhaust (I have driven car with one, they obviously don't have the refined sound attributed by a muffler as it is basically muffler delete, and there is a very annoying drone right around 2500 rpm despite the fact they are using a heimholtz - and this is normal cruising rpm so you'll be hearing it constantly )As stated, there are sound clips for all these exhausts & more on YouTube for you to compare...

I love the sound of my muffler delete, I don't think it's that loud at all idk why people say it is, maybe I'm just used to all the loud cars where I'm from. My one friend has a Audi a4 with the 40 series and I think it sounds like shit. But with the muffler delete the drone is kinda bad but put your music up you don't hear it one bit

The best bang for your buck will be the bmw performance exhaust. Search around for the best price and go it. It's a little pricey but trust me ever since I've had mine you never stop grinning. Especially through those tunnels
