As funny as this sounds- What about putting a tune on the car to further advance the problem to be more privaliant?

Customer will be back sometime in the next week or so for a carbon cleaning. If there is excessive liquid oil in any of the ports, we will check VC gasket / PCV operation.

So I got my car back after the carbon cleaning(walnut blast) and the problem is fixed. SA is waiting from bmwna to see if they will cover it under cpo.

My problem started with a slight hesitation when I would gas it at 80 mph in 6th gear. I could feel it stumble and then catch up, no SES light. I could run thru 1 and 2 with no problems all the way to redline, in third gear on a long pull, it would stumble multiple times between 2-4k rpm but no light. Not a fall on you face stumble but a momentary drop ( millisecond) in power

A down shift to third with immediate stomp of the accelerator would sometimes throw the dreaded SES light and limp mode.

The tech found the carbon using a boroscope thru the intake. We have three at work that we use for inspection services and the guys at work are always taking it home on the weekends to look at cylinder walls, inside home walls, ducting, basically all kinds of stuff. if you know someone who has one and can borrow it for a weekend, go take a look, the ones we have are $30k apiece and are generally too expensive to buy. I have been in a pinch before and tried using the Black and Decker See Snake. Its not as handy, but the one with the long head might be able to reach, the short one was like $80, I think harbour freight might have cheaper ones now

Garage List
2008 335i E90  [4.00]
Hook up a laptop with INPA running. Drive around and watch for knock events in INPA.

As for the ECU reporting the wrong injector, I have only seen this once before. The ECU was reporting injectors based on firing order, not on physical location.

I've been relying on the Autologic, but sounds like INPA would be a good thing for me to have. I know you've done a lot of sharing on your INPA threads, so I'll check them out this weekend.

Customer hasn't set up a time to come back, yet. Back to school time = nobody brings their car into the shop for a while. It's the September slump.

This car has never had a carbon cleaning, less than 40k miles, but that doesn't mean anything. There could be gobs of carbon in there. My car had lots of carbon buildup - worst I've seen yet - when I did it at 47k miles last year. Whenever he schedules another appointment, we agreed that carbon cleaning would be the next step. It's regular maintenance, anyway...

My car only has about 27k miles and the tech said that it was pretty bad. I was actually surprised with such low mileage.

Themyst had a valve cover gasket issue, which probably had some PCV implications, causing a misfire. I think if I see a lot of liquid oil down in the port when I do this car's carbon clean, it will be a sign to pull the valve cover and check the gasket or replace the whole cover. Won't be the first time we've found a defective N54 cover. I also bought a digital manometer to check the PCV and crankcase pressure.

i read through all the "Themyst" threads and the only misfire issues he posted were from procede, he is actually selling a valve cover gasket now for the n54 so i doubt that is what his problem was

dealer was checking it out for 5 hours today ($125 an hour ... ) and they think resetting the adaptations will fix it (i doubt it) if that doesnt fix it they are going to pull the valve cover and check for a defective valve spring/cam etc

Good God, 5 hours to tell you something you know won't fix it. I reset adaptations several times on this car, no dice. Nothing against any one personally that works at a dealer, but I find that there are more parts swappers and pre-delivery inspectors and no true diagnosticians (if that's a word). Guys like us typically work at / own independent shops.

I do hope they find something that helps your problem. Many of our customers are quite irritated by service advisors that give them a huge estimate for a lot of BS work, then tell them to trade it in and look at the new cars in the showroom. Then they come to us for a real estimate.

A dying, but not yet throwing codes hpfp can be a source of misfire codes.

Actually, my mechanic pointed out to me not to place my hand on the valve cover when leaning over the engine as it is not designed to carry body weight and can crack easily.

He suggested placing your hand on the oil cover cap as it is supported by the block underneath.

The valve cover.....not so much.

any update on this james?

I'm having a similar issue w/ cylinder 3 but sometimes the CEL comes back and says 3+ cylinders misfire. It's only when it's below 60 degrees outside too..... Mine is a 2008 135i w/ about 35k miles on it. BMW did a 30k on it about 6 months ago, I don't know what's included in the 30k, but I can go back and look at my records, as I'm not sure if the plugs were changed then or not. Injectors were replaced right before that.

I know this is an old thread, but to avoid starting a new thread.. was this issue ever solved?

Car is a 2008 135i, 42k miles.

I have the same issue, misfire between 2 to 3.5k ish, but will not throw a misfire code.
New OEM plugs made no difference.

Car is under warranty in the UK, however BMW have advised that they cannot detect any fault codes so therefore cannot request authorisation to proceed with warranty work.

Nope, customer traded the car back into the dealer for something different long ago. He didn't want to deal with it anymore. Can't blame him, but I do think that we would have fixed it had he let us go at it.
