Talking PTF ProTune Dyno

1st off, I’d like to thank ProTuning Freaks, specifically Jake@PTF for tuning my car. 2nd, I’d like to thank Undercover Performance for their time on the dyno & rescheduling with me after it snowed last week. For anyone in the New Jersey/Southeast PA-area, I recommend that everyone get over to Undercover & check it out if they have a chance. Everyone there (Garth, Angie & the rest of the Undercover crew) was really cool & was quick to ask me about my car and then show off some of the shop projects: several (4-6?) high HP Supras, a 1,200 WHP Cobra-TT engine & a custom Turbo Trailblazer SS (ALL running the ProEFI of course ). Wish I had brought my camera, but check out Undercover's Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/UndercoverPerformanceNJ) as they're always posting shop updates.

So after getting locally tuned by Jake back in August, I unfortunately never had the time to get on a dyno & measure the gains. Well I finally found the time and wanted to see what the car is putting down. Some quick background information about my car & the mods installed:
  • 2008 E90 335i (6AT / Stock Turbos)
  • COBB ProTunes for 93 Octane & E85 Blend
  • aFe Dual Cone Intake (That badly need to be cleaned)
  • Akrapovic Catless Downpipes
  • Helix Front Mounted Intercooler
  • Evolution Racewerks Charge Pipe
  • Forge Motorsport Diverter Valves (Yellow Springs)
  • Burger Motorsports Oil Catch Can

Since I had never been dynod before, I decided that I would get dyno numbers for three different tune settings: a Stock Baseline with the mods installed, the 93 octane ProTune, and finally mix in some E85 & run the E85-Blend ProTune. It was between 50-60 degree outside & Undercover has a Dyno Mite dyno.

Stock Baseline with Installed Mods: 270 WHP / 290 WTQ

93 Octane ProTune: 380 WHP / 395 WTQ (Delta Over Stock: 110 WHP / 105 WTQ) **Not sure why there are those dips in graphs 2 & 3, but Garth thinks it’s probably the OEM DME pulling timing – Note that the specific RPM it occurs at changes. We were able to get one undisturbed pull (Graph #1) by reseting the DME before the pull.

E85 Blend ProTune: 428 WHP / 460 WTQ (Delta Over Stock: 158 WHP / 170 WTQ and Delta Over 93 Octane ProTune: 48 WHP / 65 WTQ). The second E85 pull read 420 WHP / 465 WTQ. Can't remember the values for the 3rd.

The drivability on both COBB ProTunes is silky smooth (no boost oscillations, consistent power delivery) and beyond thrilled now that the numbers & gains are in. Like I said at the beginning, I’d really like to thank Jake@PTF for tuning my car -- Expect a thread soon (which I'll like to here) on my experience getting locally tuned.

Def, sadly I'll be waiting until it gets nice out again It is December & up in the Northeast the weather's been great (40s) for turbo cars, but traction has been non-existent. There was an Exotics Rally Event recently (roll on & drag) and ALL of the cars that weren't AWD had problems getting traction

Very impressive results, Eric. Hit me up when you're gonna go, I'll be frequenting englishtown quite a bit when it finally warms up again.

Nice numbers benzy. Just curious, why do you have a 93 protune map? (Unless you don't have access to E85 all the time I guess?)

You need to go back and dyno again. I think the dip in your torque curve @ 4000 rpm is due to wheel spin on the drum. I had the same issue with HPF's dyno and until we put 300 + lbs in the trunk we kept getting a drop in the curve at 4k. I would be pissed if the tech running the dyno didn't point out that issue and take action to correct it. Other than that the numbers are killer. Great job guys.

Do you happen to know what numbers you were putting down with the OTS Aggressive Stg2+ 93oct map?
I plan to protune for e40-50 but I'm considering protuning for a 93 map as well if the gains warrant it.

I put down 353whp on that map with a dynojet. However, there was also another 335 there that did 370whp on the same day.

If you're not seeing 160whp deltas you're running the wrong tune

Great result my man. They did an awesome job on tuning.

Im wondering how much power different between Protune and Etune. Thinking of switching to Cobb from Procede.

Shouldn't be much of a difference at all. They are logging in the car real time so it is just a quicker process.

Yea, 93 octane is always available and I run it as my DD map. Since I'm in the Northeast E85 isn't that common (I actually drove from North NJ into Philly just for the E85 & then back into NJ to get dynod). I also don't wanna over abuse the injectors/fuel pump by consistently running E85 blends, so it's more of my Hooligan/Tire Shredder Map.

For whatever reason, those drops only occurred on those 2 pulls. We reset the ECU on the same tune & the dip went away, and we didn't adjust the tie-down straps for the E85 tune and there weren't any dips.

I have no idea, but there are def quality gains over the OTS Maps. I know some other people have posted their OTS --> ProTune results, I just didn't have the time to get some extra pulls with the OTS Stage 2+FMIC Aggressive Map.

Thanks a lot everyone, the numbers came out great & I love how nobody knows what this car can do until it's too late 91Octane --> Go COBB & give it a chance, the fact that it can tune a little more in-depth and adjust the fueling def gives it advantage over just piggy setups (especially when running the Ethanol Blends)
