Every other start (than the first) and itīs no problemo. My car also consumes a lot of benzin, i mostly drive quite nicely and still itīs about 12,5 litres per 100 kilometres..quite a lot!

Now my car is going to be checked in next week. They will change oil, brake fluids and valve clearance and it will cost ībout 550€, ouch! Valve clearance is about 300€ and it should be checked in every oil change, jeez! I wonder if itīs true that they should fix valve clearance on warranty? I asked and they said no..i just need some proof from somewhere, anyone?

Please help! Thanks

I can't comment on any specific noises or anything but check that the car has had the timing belt tensioner recall work complete and if it has had any work to the wiring loom (some suffered from poor crimping which causes fault codes to accumulate).

Definitely worth a look, they are great cars if you get a good one.

Some heads up on the maintenance of these cars for present and future reference.

Last week I had my valve clearance checked and the scheduled oil service. All is good, no valves had to be adjusted. I am just a few km shy of 40K.

I asked about the several problems regarding the engine to my mechanic and he said that all those problems are due to poor maintenance. So, here's how the 320si should be maintained:

1. Oil change every 9.000-10.000 km AT LEAST with Castrol Edge 0-40
2. Valve clearance check every 40.000km and adjustment if necessary
3. ABSOLUTELY gas over 95 octanes. I use 97 octanes (Shell VPower).
4. ABSOLUTELY proper warm-up. The cylinder block is made out of aluminum. Although aluminum is light, it is NOT very resistant to rapid temperature changes. So if the oil in the engine is not warmed up properly and you rev it high...you will probably crack the cylinder, especially if the above had not been met (i.e. proper oil in the car). Temperature brings me to the next point...
5. Check cobalt's posts a few pages back (page 17). Make sure your car works at around 85-93 C (check it through the secret menu) and not below. If not, replace the thermostat.
6. Check if you belt tensioner needs to be replaced. There was a recall done by BMW for some 320si's.

There are si's here that have over 200.000km on the clock, so proper maintenance is key!

I know that some of you guys are in very cold climates, so if you rev the car when the engine is not properly warmed-up then you might have issues.

I agree with you and would add a piece of advice that BMW gave, once the car is warmed up, to make sure I regularly went up to 3/4k rpm on urban drives.

I'm sorry to tell you, but this doesn't sound healthy at all.

Take it to BMW immediately!

No idea.

Worst case scenario is a new engine.

Nicos 120i, Detox!!

I've got a problem,,

In my car new engine yes. (renewed)

and a morning enters all of them difficultly, this lasts until 5-6 seconds, after it in all order.
Looks promising, takes little 7.6l /100km , an oil level does not change. There is fresh software start.
And 100 octane gasoline.

What may be the trouble?

Thank you

I had the same issues with my si, it went into BMW several times and had a software update, timing chain tensioner changed, new plugs and new coilpacks. It improved it alot but it never ran 100% in the 6 months I had it. In the end I got sick of it and traded it in but the BMW garage where I traded it in at said it needed the oil breathers cleaning out, they'd done a couple of si's before. Might be worth checking these things before going spending thousands on an engine. I still see my old si driving about so they must have cured the problem

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and madly considering buying a 320Si.
Can anyone tell me if BMW have now resolved this issue with the engines? I understand that BMW now only supply reconditioned blocks since around July time. Have they actually modified the used blocks with upgraded liners or are the engines still a time-bomb?

Cheers

Robbie

Let me add to everyone's tells of woe. I have a 320i e93 on 38k, BMW change the coil-packs mid-September through their product enhancement scheme. A month later, I was having idling issue (car shaking); poor emissions, etc. After having the low fuel pressure replaced the car was running sweet. Until Thursday gone when it start misfiring, and sounding like it's only running on 3 cylinders. Fuel injector on 2nd cylinder needs replacing.

I have had this car just under 12 months and it has been the most unreliable car I have ever owned. My E46 325ci gave me over 6 years of motoring pleasure without missing a heartbeat.

Think it maybe time to go back to the world of VAG.

it doesnt mean that all si's have this problem...
but it is something that you have to keep in mind that it MIGHT occur to you also...

personally i have stated many times before in other posts that si has another major problem and this is the thermostat and thermostat housing.

this is difficult to find out if it has a problem or not because the car does not have a temperature indicator in the dashboard.

however i have replaced 3 times thermostat until i found out that BMW has replaced with new part number the thermostat housing ALSO!

i replaced both last time and now it is ok.

imagine your car running on low engine temperature, specially in winter and you reving it uo to the limit...

maybe this causes also the engine liners failure?

all si holders please check your engine running temperature.
in normal conditions it should be not below 85 0c and not more than 94 0c

thats another common problem with most of the si's. the exhaust warning light comes on and stays on until you plug in a diagnostic kit to erase the fault code. all diagnostics say: catalytic efficiency below threshold or old catacutic convertor.
the cost to change this is more than 1000 euro because it goes together as one part with all the exhaust pipe from the engine. personally i have the same problem and i have bought from ebay a bluetooth diagnostic kit for 50 euro and i delete the fault code bymyself whenever it lights up.

personally i believe that it is something wrong with one of the 2 lamda sensors even that the diagnostic kit does not mention anything

ANSWER: leave it like this... there is no reason to change catalitic convertor

by the way: what is your average fuel consumption?
