To make my long story short, younger brother ended up blowing my motor by throwing the trans into 2nd instead of 4th. As a result the timing chain had snapped and a few pistons seem to have kissed a few valves. Still in the process of tearing everything down but it isn't looking too good for the n54 here, new head will be needed I am told by my shop as well as a few new pistons. I could sit here cry, whine and most importantly make my brother wash the car every week for the next 2 years of his life but instead I choose to take a breath, and take advantage of this opportunity. As soon as the tear down is done and we have a full picture of everything, I will be ordering CP forged 9;5;1 pistons from vac and possibly getting the head machined to flow better by a local shop( Suggestions Needed ). I have pm'd tony for stg3 turbos, RB about his (which he has in-stock). Tony says 1 month for the stg3 but the RB are already proving to provide a ton of power for the money. It all depends if VT can finish up the stg3 turbos in a month or two I would be willing to give them a go if not then RBs it is. I also want to say that I did contact vishnu and waiting to hear back from them as well. Car is going from procede and dci to fully built with upgraded turbos, suggestions are welcome. Stay tooned.

I say wait a month or two to decide on your turbo setup! Vargas kit looks promising!

I would say that a daily driver car with upgraded twins would be more fun around town because of less turbo lag with potential still for the big horsepower of a single. Regardless, u can have all the power u want but if u can't put it to the ground it's useless.

Now on to the benefits/differences of twin turbos over a single....twins, depending on how they are sized, will typically spool up quicker reducing lag. The downside is if they aren't big enough they don't continue to make more HP all the way to redline (stock and current hybrid turbos). A large single takes a little longer to spool, however will continue to make more HP to redline. The Stage 3 Vargas is building *I think* will spool up quicker than the single and still be able to push enough air to make power all the way to redline, so it may be a win/win. It probably won't have the peak power potential of the single though. Given enough RPMs, the single should make more peak power. The N54 currently isn't revving out 8-9000 RPMs though so it may not matter for now. On another note though, the Vishnu/FFTEC single isn't running anywhere near its max potential right now. No i was not asking a loaded question.
Thanks for actually answering my question jdbretz! I wanted input on what makes the twins desirable to the 335i community, as opposed to a compound turbo, or single turbo setup. More over, I was looking to find out what the original poster was setting their goal on, for drive-ability and performance. My affiliation with FFTEC has nothing to do with what I was asking about. |
