Automatic E90 auto start/stop (MSA)
A depressing amount of my driving is a couple miles around the corner to the store, more time spent at lights than in motion. My highway fuel consumption is fine (25-30mpg) but for most of my driving it averages under 10 which is just silly. I've been researching the MSA system trying to figure out if it's possible to retrofit to my car - the modules are definitely in place, but my searching suggests that even though it's standard on euro E90s, maybe only on manual transmissions? Does the first-gen MSA system (F series have a new MSA-II) work on automatic transmissions too? Or only the manual and M DCT?
I'd love to try retrofitting it into my car, but I don't want to go to the trouble of getting buttons only to be disappointed. |

FWIW, my brother has an F30 that has done over 15,000 miles now. He has kept detailed records of his fuel consumption over his mixed driving commute with Auto Start/Stop enabled and disabled. He decided to track it because he finds the system annoying. His conclusion: this awesome fuel-saving feature nets him an impressive 0.8mpg. He is looking into having it permanently coded out.
