How bad is using your pod and using your BT phone w/ no Nav screen?

I am looking hard right now at a 2011 335i with msport package, comfort package, step, Bluetooth, iPod USB port. The only problem is th car doesn't have navigation. Is it a real PITA using your phone, trying to see names and phone #s on the radio screen? Or is it somewhat manageable?

Also, how is it using your iPod thru that same smaller radio screen?

I was pretty dead set on navigation, but the msport package looks pretty great!

I have 08 w/o nav and have no problem with bluetooth for iPhone or iPod.

Thanks for the replies. Are you able to download your phone book? Can you access your phone book scrolling via the radio screen? Can you use voice commands to access phone numbers? Sorry if these are dumb questions as I'm not real familiar with the functionality of the 335i 's Bluetooth phone access.

Assuming you can use radio controls to access your entire iPod menu.

Thanks!

BT phone works beautifully with Pro Business radio. Phone book through radio screen is working fine, could be more reactive but it does a great job with the limited interface size. Overall its very usable, if not perfect.

Voice command works too but does not sync with phone book (you have to enter yourself the phone book for voice command, clumsy).

Don't have ipod integration, but I do have MP3 CD and it is very good, it has song listed by names, artists etc. The screen is small but sufficient. I suppose ipod integration carries the same features. Doesn't play DVD MP3, which is a bummer.

Plenty of reviews say the iDrive has been clunky and difficult to use up to 08-09. All I know is that the Pro radio does a great job at being useful, even if it is not pretty.

It works fine, its just more annoying seeing 1-2 lines at a time. With iDrive you can see a lot more at once.

But if you're trying to convince yourself to "settle" for a car without iDrive, then don't. You'll regret not holding out for one later. If you never considered or wanted iDrive to begin with then it's a different story, but it sounds like you were already set on getting it.

Yes, from what I've read the CCC iDrive wasn't the best. The newer CIC from 2009 onward is easy to use. Since bman5150's looking at cars in the 2011 model year range, shouldn't be any issue.

bman5150: seriously, if you have nav on your wishlist, hold out 'til you find the right car. M-sport is nice, but I suspect you'll wish you'd had the full iDrive experience. Then you'll take a bath financially getting out of that 2011 and into one equipped how you wanted it originally.

All great thoughts and advice. I appreciate it. I originally did not want nav but have since been second guessing myself. My Honda pilot has nav with BT and it really nice! I'm really on the fence...partly because I love the msport look and also because I think the one I'm looking at is priced aggressively-likely because it is rwd and has no nav!

I'd be keeping the car for a while. I think it's a dealer demo car....I do have some reservations about this but it has the balance of the factory warranty left.

Since you're looking at '11 I'd go with iDrive if it was me. But if you end up paying an insane premium for it then skip it. Phone is very doable without navi (I have a '07 and the CCC was so clunky I just got one without it entirely).

I just went through the same thing. But when I came across a 2011 335i e90 CPO, w/ Sport, Premium, & Conv. package and less than 8k on it I was willing to sacrifice the NAV.

I had a little buyers remorse for a few days. But now that I have settled into it. It's all
good.

My phone fits in the little tray in front of the console quite well at about a 45 degree angle. I use the audio over bluetooth (which is excellent) and I can glance down occasionally to look at the map if I really need to. Although I dont have to most times because im using Google Maps/Nav and its great about being very descriptive about distances, screen names, etc.

If it really bothered me I would get a windshield mount but 99% of the time I can go just on the audio because the software is that good. Since I am not concerned about resale I would pass on it even if I ordered a car because those systems quickly become out of date and are usually crap compared to what is built into Android.

thats a tough decision you got there. M sport no nav or nav no m sport....if it came down to it....Id say nav no m sport cause you can do all that stuff later.

I don't have Nav.
Voice works with BT.
The phonebook shows on the screen broken down by first letter.
USB works and so does iPod.

Works for me.

Another point to consider is that maintaining Nav and maps up to date cost often a little fortune, much more than having an independent GPS device.

To summarize, like Techwhiz, I don't feel like something is missing from the car. It just performs the function well and practically. The iDrive looks better and more eye candy, that has some value, but it does not change the way you live with the car.

Don't forget you cant see the screen of the radio w/o nav if your wearing polarized sun glasses. that was the big deal breaker for me

I've never been a fan of nav. Overpriced toy in my opinion. My BB has nav if I get lost...rarely.
