First post here on WWD&C and wanted to see if anyone has any idea how to repair factory "orange peel" without having to resort to a complete re spray, will a clay bar help?

getting a good detailer to do a wetsand is really the only way to more or less fully cure it.

Taking off a layer of clear coat that is already factory thin, not my best option but sounds like an only one based on your comment and other online research I've done re the problem. Can't believe they leave the factory this way. Next time I'll be aware of it and know what to look for. Black cars especially. Thanks for the reply. Regards. Bill

I agree. In today's day and age it shouldn't be that bad. I think it is laziness. This guy wetsanded his e91

Not just a good detailer.... a really good one who knows what he is doing. Since he has to polish the entire car after sanding (probably a 2 stage polishing), you are looking at some $$$$. If you plan to do this don't let the cost dictate your choice of a detailer.

Pay a bit more and get it done right the first time. While you are there, get it Opti-coated to minimize future defects.

I mean BMW is being lazy...specifically the guy or machine spraying is not doing a good job.

I drove off the lot not knowing that my car has this issue. After detailing my car for the first time myself, I noticed it. Called the dealership and complained. They did a complimentary clay bar, wax and polish. It came out great but one of the Associates told me that if it wasn't what I wanted that I could file a claim with bmw NA. If you purchased the car new, you might be able to get the dealership to fix it for you

So then is the clear coat sprayed on by human or robot? Once the cars are wetsanded they look amazing, it seems it is just a rough clear coat that is the issue.

Clear coat is by robot

all late model cars have this type of finish... it's not the traditional glassy smooth look anymore. Check out all makes from Acura to VW, they all have this type of "orange peel" finish

Yea wet sanding and removing the clear is pretty much the only way and BMWs have a lot more clear on it then most manufactures but I wouldn't worry about it.

3 Series are pretty common with orange peel on the doors and sometimes light on the hood trust me I shopped and shopped for months looking for specific options and no peel finally I gave up start looking at 3 Series in parking lots they almost all have it even 5's haven't looked much at 7's or X's but i noticed it less as you go up to a more expensive model

yea its rough and its robot plus they do try to spray it on thick and all at once if you have body work done on a bmw it will loose the peel because the shop guy sprays thin layers at a time.

Trust me I drove over a screw connected to something that pulled it up around the rear wheel well causing scratches and flat tire but now I have no peel on that side of car and looks great. I asked the question from the body shop and was told it is due to the large amounts of clear sprayed on to the car at the factory and yes you can buff some off and clean up but that can be bad in its own.
