With a handgun, you're heart pumping like crazy because of an intruder, there's a good chance you can miss your target because all it takes is a little flinch.

If you live in CA, you can't legally carry a gun in your car unless it's locked, in the trunk and separate from the ammo.
+1 on the shotgun from me too. You have the sound of the action as an audible deterrent before having to shoot and depending on the type of ammo you use you also run less risk of over penetration if you miss your shot. Anything where you use 2 hands will be more accurate than 1. A twitch of your wrist with a pistol will be off target but 2 hands are more stable.

First thing I would buy (since I already have a rifle and a few handguns) are a bunch of hi capacity magazines. Seems like those may be the first and easiest to go along with "assult" weapons. Whatever that means.

Ammo will not go away in the near future so throw your $$ somewhere else IMO.

Price Help

I don't know much about hand guns other than I'd like to have one to go to the range and defense. My buddy's trying to sell me a Kimber gold match .45. He also has a .22lr conversion for it. He want $1k for the package. Is this a good price? He says it only has 1000 rounds through it and it looks clean to me....

Kimber is an excellent gun the price seems pretty good too, especially if he is throwing in the conversion kit. I've never seen the gold match for less than $1200 anywhere

is this the one your friend is selling you? http://www.kimberamerica.com/1911/go.../gold-match-ii

If so I say it is a good price at 1k, how many mags does it come with and any other accessories?

Before buying the gun I would go shoot it to see how you like it. Also think about the size if you are going to conceal carry.

If you dont know much about guns, you should really take a course. I'm not trying to make any insults, but its the best thing you can do for yourself as a gun owner.

Yep that's the one except its an earlier generation type I.

Thanks for the info everyone. As a hunter I have handled guns but mostly rifles and shotguns. I have shot .45 at the local range a few times but, I will definitely take a handgun course.

Called them to see whats going on. I really really needed to get one of the shotguns tomorrow, so I would give it for the GF for xmas, but i guess its a no go

The department that handles DROS and background checks is no longer taking calls, or even messages! The nice lady I spoke to told me that they got 13,000 background check requests yesterday alone! Now all this hysteria ruined the holiday. They said not to expect a release for another 10-15 business days due to the volume. They only have 20 people handling that

Picked up an HK P30 (V3) chambered in 9mm. The grip feels outstanding. The pistol points very naturally.

I agree with the grip. I was originally looking to pick one of those up in .40, but ended up with 2 1911s.... I should still get one of those. I'm quite sure you'll love shooting it but i still want to hear about it!!

Hate to be the downer but I didn't like shooting my friend's P30. The gun itself feels solid and the grip is great, but the reset distance on the trigger was way too long. After each shot the distance from where the trigger resets and there is that click to pulling it back and it stopping before firing is too long and just doesn't feel right. That and the mag release is a little too sensitive and my friend (who owns the gun) kept dropping the mag on accident.

You can never go wrong with two 1911s my friend. I'll do a write-up on the P30 here pretty soon. I'll do a comparison because I also picked up a Sig P229R E2 with night sights and the short reset trigger (SRT). I sold my old P229R this past summer to fund my Ed Brown but the fact of the matter was that I missed having at least one Sig.

Thanks man! I highly recommend it. I'm a big HK fan. My HK45C will by my carry gun if somehow a law is passed which bans the use of magazines (already legally owned) with capacities of greater than 10.

I'd recommend checking one out (if you don't already have one).

I hear you on the reset. I also own a Walther PPQ (9mm). It has the best out-of-the-box trigger of any striker-fired pistol I've ever shot. Not even a question. The reset is is insanely short and crisp as well.

The P30 SA pull pales in comparison but I don't find it unworkable by any means. I'm likely going to convert mine (V3) to a light LEM setup.

Sounds like your friend needs: 1) Practice; 2) A different grip (I have never inadvertently actuated a trigger-guard magazine release).

Bottom line is: Different strokes for different folks. Some people really can't get used to DA/SA operation. Some just get spoiled by custom 1911 triggers. I've been spoiled by my Ed Brown Kobra but I just accept the P30 trigger for what it is.

He's also left handed and was in the Navy haha. (I'm a Marine)

I haven't found any problems in the many times I have rented a Springfield XD of any style. For the money I would say it is the best handgun I have fired.

Once I get done with my current assignment and get married I plan on starting a small collection of handguns. Being enlisted and living in barracks I would have to keep any firearms in the armory. I know some armorers and thats a bad idea if you dont want other people playing with your stuff. This is also if no new ridiculous laws come into effect in the next 3 years. An XDm is for sure on that list and probably a S&W M500 just for fun.

If you guys haven't seen this one before wherever I mentioned it, this is also one handgun I look forward to owning. The Guncrafter Industries Model 3. A buddy of mine from Hawaii has the Model 2 and it is a sweet piece. Price is high but they are all hand made by a very small company with a big focus on quality. Plus the .50GI copper hollow point rounds are sick!

Sounds like he didn't do too much pistol shooting in the Navy.

Thank you very much for your service, Nate!

I personally do not care for XDs/XD(M)s. I've fired all kinds of them (including the little single stack .45) and I just don't like them. The 1911 is the only pistol with which I will tolerate a grip safety.

That said, I constantly encourage people to pick the pistol that works best for them because at the end of the day, that's what matters most! You're certainly not the only one who loves XDs. My friend and his father both swear by them.

Just want to say that I had Mike make a custom leather guitar strap for my friend and it came out awesome. Mike was a pleasure to work with, very professional, and his prices were very fair. Definitely going to have him do more work for me in the future.
