dct and throttle response question

So i have a 335is with dct. Overall i love the car, but one thing that annoys me at times is that there seems to be a bit of hesitation in the throttle/tranny in certain situations. For instance, i notice it the most when i am rolling up to a light and i shift down to second or even first and the light turns green before i come to complete stop. At this point i get back on the throttle, but the car hesitates for a second or two before taking off. I was just wondering if this is normal and if there is anything that can be done to fix it? I suppose it's even more noticeable to me because I've been driving manuals for the past 20+ years and they don't seem to have this problem. Any thoughts or insights on this would be appreciated.

The delay is most prominent in D-mode, it's reduced in S-mode.

It annoys the crap out of me as well.

I never have that problem when car is in right gear for quick turbo spool (maually downshift to put car above 2.2k rpm). It happens quite often when car is in regular automatic mode so i never drive car in this mode. Sport button in automatic mode doesnt seem to improve this throttle lag during slowing down then accelerating situation. S mode always put car in lower gear but i noticed that it holds lower gear for too long for my liking.

I had the same thing but what terrified me the most was at random times when coasting and doing a lane change I would punch the throttle and there would be lag where nothing would happen. Nearly got rear ended a couple of times. Took it in and there was a SIB on the DCT. They didn't tell me what the software update addressed but said it was the only thing they could do since the problem is hard to replicate. DCT response is much improved now, I don't get the hesitation I use to. As others have stated, if you want to get instant response shift into S and engage the Sport button.

Thanks all for the responses so far. I should clarify that i drive it 99% of the time in manual mode with the sport button on, so this is when I'm noticing the hesitation. I figured it would be even worse without the sport button on, so i haven't really tried it that way yet. Maybe i need a software upgrade although my car is a 2012 which i just picked up in August.

It is normal when the car is still going through adaptations to your driving habits.

There are two things that are adapting, the DME and the DCT Mechatronics controller.

To make a long storey short, drive the car in manual with Sport On for best optimization until the adaption is done

Ok but how long will that take cause I already have 5k miles on it?

Your car should already have latest dct software from sib.
If you know any shop or friend with bt tool, have them reset ecu and dct adaptation to see if it gets any better.

You really need to manually downshift it a couple of gears before you get into the throttle. BTW I have my kick down button blocked so it drives a lot more like a stick without any auto kick down.

I did Euro Delivery on Oct 2010 and picked up a 2011 335is convertible with DCT. Loved driving it in Europe.

However, when I got it back to the states, the delayed downshift drove me crazy. I took it into the dealer and they said it was normal.

I had been spoiled by VW's DSG dual-clutch box and found it hard to believe that BMW's version was buggy. I sprung for the 335is because of the DCT availability.

But between the shifting lag and weird stalling when slowing and turning at the same time, (known DCT issue on the M3s) I traded the car one year later for a 335d.

I'm so much happier with the D it isn't even funny. The slushbox in the D blows the DCT in the IS away. And I get 10+ more mpg with the same level of power.

I always drive in M mode, and I rarely ever notice that problem. Sometimes I get a little jerk, but never any hesitation

Now I'm scared. Lease is ending on my 335 manual and my IS/DCT is in production. Was expecting a little loss of total control, but this hesitation crap has me worried. Did I make a mistake?

it's the only thing that spoils a very good car, it doesnt seem to affect latest models, i'm guessing i have an old map, i am going to ask BMW if they can flash the latest map to my car, or get it fully re-mapped later. A couple of times today i tried to beat a car at a roundabout, floored the gas pedal and nothing, but that might have been the traction control, going to try it more with the DCT switched off

It's not isolated to the iS- actually happens in every three series I drove so far. I still get it every once a while and I'm on a Dinan stage III with free flow exhaust with the Alpina Flash...
To be fair though it doesn't happen nearly as much as it used to as a stocker.

we don't have the iS in europe, i have the bog standard 335i M Sport, what or where did you get the Alpina flash and what did it do?

After doing some research, it seems its a common DCT lag issue which is apparently corrected with a software update, mine is 2010, i doubt any new cars off the production line will have this problem...i'm going to my dealer tomorrow to push them to sort it.
