I went to a garage today to see about getting some winter tyres and they tried to sell me some Goodyear eagle vector tyres, they said they are fine for winter tyres but after googling them I see they are all weather tyres, I can get them at a decent price, but I only want them if they are any good on ice/snow as I have another set of wheels for my summer tyres..

Any help appreciated please

they will be a compromise to use all year round, not as good as either summer or winter tyres in their own environments, but better than summers in winter and vice versa (if that makes sense). if you want a separate set of winter tyres, then there is probably no point in compromising, just get get proper M&S (mud&snow) or snow tyres.

i suspect they were offering them as they didn't have any m&s....

Just thinking out loud...

So long as you're not hooning around in either summer or winter would all weather tyres be a good compromise? Especially considering we (not speaking for those north of the border) generally don't get really bad snow and ice for prolonged periods? Surely when you need grip the most eg wet motorways etc then all weathers would perform better than summers?

And am I right in thinking that the US market gets all weather tyres fitted as standard?

I run Goodyear Cargo Vector most of the year round on my van and they are a pretty good tyre. Trouble is there has been no hot weather here this year and it's been wet most of the year.

Doesn't look like we will be seeing much snow this year anyway?

Im not buying much into the all weather tires at all.

I run summers and then winters.

But answering your question, logically and through experience I can say:

Yes winter tires have a softer compound with more block movement so is great for ice and snow and temp range. BUT..... tread depth is the most determining factor here.

Case in point: I ran conti winter contacts on my 330 and we ran conti sport 5p on dads merc and drove and spot. ok could not go anywhere near as fast as i could but still worked.

So the all year idea I dont see how they will be that good esp if tread is around 4mm or lower?

Then again I have never tried them. Could be miles better?

Thanks, I'm going to take the advice and get a proper winter set of tyres as that's when they will be used. I've managed to get hold of 2 bridgstone blizzak tyres in 225/45/17 but can't find any 255/40/17, nobody seems to hold stock in that size.

Will just have to keep looking

They are a M+S tyre with the snowflake, this is what we put on our vans when they go to the alps. They are a decent winter tyre, but not an out and out snow tyre.

Would that be the Goodyear tyre your talkin about??

Thanks Oli, I'm caught in 2 minds about what to do, I can get a full set of the Goodyear tyres, but can only get the fronts in the bridgstones, nobody seems to stock the rear tyre sizes and would have to order them in which could take a while I'm told
