318i 56 reg with missfire and timing chain noise !

Hello
My neighbour just asked me to take a look at his E90 318i, its missfiring, difficult to start and engine management light is on..quick look and it seems to have a nasty metallic noise coming from front of engine, if you rev it and then let the revs come down, it rattles, sounds to me like the timing chain, I'm just going to search on here, I don't know much about this engine as mine is the 325i .
What is worrying is his has only done 40 thou miles..
Poor bloke, I was going to tell him to get some new plugs or maybe a coil pack or two till I heard the noise.
Any ideas appreciated thanks.
Its a petrol.

Errors should be read before adding anything to this.

It could be timing chain or something else.

errors were read yesterday at indie, and came up with various misfire related errors and also a camshaft timing sensor error, which makes me think along with the metalic noise the timing chain is at fault.. Not good.
Did a search on here and internet, not coming up with much yet..apart from it seems that a modified tensioner is available for the N42 and N46 engine, will this be an N46?
My past experience on engines tells me it will be a major repair if it turns out to be chain

Update.

For those interested ?
Timing chain had slipped, got repaired at Indie BMW Specialist for 350, took a couple of days.
No damage to valves (Luckily) new chain, tensioner, etc.
Not good for such a low miles engine..
Happy new year!

Tough one but at a guess the chain could of jumped we've seen a few (I'm the service manager for A1BN www.a1bnspecialist.co.uk/ ) plus of course there will also be the problem re chain guides on top as these are a known weak point and it'll show as an error re timing as your research on the net has proven.

Always best to get it checked but checked by someone that knows the product hence a decent BMW Indy.
