Sudden jerk & loud clank from 6AT transmission after COBB AP installation.

Has anyone else experienced a sudden jerk and loud clank from the transmission when shifting into Reverse right after installing the COBB AP or uploading a new map in a 6AT? It happened to me after I installed the COBB AP with 2.01 maps several weeks ago. I put the car back into Park after the jerk&clank happened for the first time and it reoccurred when I put the car back into Reverse. I noticed that the revs jumped up to about 1,000 rpm when the Reverse gear engaged and the car jerked.

The jerk&clank did not happen again until I uploaded the new 2.02 maps a few days ago. Same situation: I uploaded the maps, started the car, put it in Reverse, and BANG! It scared the shit out of my girlfriend. I am away for business right now and cannot take videos or perform any tests until the weekend.

My car has 25,000 miles and has been treated very well; I am sure some members go WOT more often in one night than I have in 3 years. The only mods I have are a BMW Performance Exhaust and AMS FMIC. No transmission-related codes have been thrown after the incidents.

Any ideas?

Interesting. Did it go away after some driving like in my case? Does it reappear after loading different maps?

I'll contact COBB and see what they say.

I loaded the AP into my buddies 07 AT and experienced none of that even after changing maps.

Do your revs jump up to 1,000 when this happens? Did this happen to your car before you installed the AP? The jerk/clank that I experienced is extremely rough. If this happened every time I started the car, I probably would've contacted COBB by now or returned the AP for a refund and that is why I have a hard time believing that we are experiencing the same issue.

I think that my issue is COBB related, so if you are experiencing the same thing (but more often) then going to the dealer will not help you since the problem would go away after unmarrying the AP and no codes are thrown. To reproduce the issue on my car, I would have to install the AP at the dealer. I think we all know what they would do next...

When I loaded the latest maps my tranny wouldn't shift down to M1 for whatever reason. After about 100 feet it slammed into 1st year. No idea what the deal was, but it has never occurred since that time.

Have you tried uninstalling the Cobb and seeing if this still happens? If it does maybe the gear is going bad.

'08 335XI, DME code, IGDOS
Using 2.01/93, 2.02/STD91 and 2.02/STD93 alternately. Everything works fine.

What is your DME code?

Reviving an old thread here.

Same thing has been happening to me when either install the AP or switch maps.

Definately Cobb related. Anyone have an answer?

Anytime you switch Maps, the DME needs to completely readapt to the tune that's been installed. This is significantly more noticeable on the ATs (which have a slightly throttle lag immediately after flashing a new map).

I've noticed after flashing to my E85-blend that the revs will go from a normal ~1k on startup to 1.5k (never over 2k) and after a few seconds it will calm back down. More than likely it's just the engine/DME readjusting to the new cam timing.

As far as the heavy thud/clank, try waiting until the revs settle down before setting off. No matter what, there will be a noticeable delay in the throttle response until the DME adapts to the new tune -- Nothing a couple 2nd & 3rd gear pulls can't fix

Don't know bout the n54, but my n55 auto was more responsive right after the flash to the extreme almost touching the gas pedal and boosting, but after the car adapts it def dials it down a bit to be more reasonable

I only get that clank in reverse if I flash a linear map. I can flash all the stock throttle maps all day and it won't make that clank in reverse even if I immediately flash one after the other.

Happens to me from time to time but ONLY happens in reverse after I flash a map... After a short drive everything is good..!!

FYI: I too use the LT (linear throttle) maps..
