Would you buy this BMW or something else...

...for the money?

A local guy is selling his 2008 335xi that has only 17K on the odometer. He said it's never been out in the rain and pampered since he bought it. He works in NYC and comes home weekends, so that's the only time he gets to drive it.

Anyway, it has the premium, winter (heated seats, etc.) and convenience packages, is Monaco blue with gray leather interior. In additional, he paid for extended warranty (6 years or 100,000 miles). He's asking $25,300 for it, but I think I can do a little better since the warranty will only be good for about a year.

My '06 330xi has been an excellent car, especially since I ditched the run-flat tires. It's hands down the best car I've even owned and has about 123k on the odometer. I drive a lot for work and am getting a little nervous with so many miles on mine, and with some scratches and dings on the body, I am craving something newer that looks really sweet. I don't think it's worth spending the money to have body work done on mine to make it nicer, but I'm certainly open to suggestions. I should be able to get about $9-10,000 for it, based on NADA/KBB/Edmunds.

My other thought was to spend more and get something like a VW Passat Diesel so I get better fuel economy. That would run me closer to 35k though, and I'm not sure I want to spent that much on a car that I drive so much.

Thanks in advance?

Do it. 17k is nothing. I did more on my bike in the past 2 years. But shoot for at least 23k...

Monaco blue is a sweet color... plus the low miles? Get it.

Even at $25K you're well within current blue book considering the warranty, so get it!

http://www.bmwofridgefield.com/certi...d537aaa92c.htm Let him know that he is asking dealership prices. Low miles are great but this should help you get him down. If anything, you could get a TDI Jetta near new for that price.

I can pay cash so I don't care about financing.

I'm concerned about the performance and reliability, as well as the fuel economy. The Passat has only 140 horses, so it's going to be a big change from my 330xi. I don't abuse my car, but I do like to blast off from time to time, hitting a high of about 130 once. I do like the 40 MPH (or more) on the highway, and that will save me plenty at the pump.

I just don't know if I can drive a VW after driving BMWs for over 10 years. It's not like I'll be stepping off the earth or anything, but it will be different for sure.

Hmmm. I seem to be of a different opinion than all others: keep you current car! You seem to be happy with your car. OK, don't we all crave something new all the time? I'd be graving something new after 6 weeks in a brand new Passat ... Any other daily commuter will also wear down and get miles on it quickly. Read Efthreeoh's post about his 200,000 miles on his car if you're worried about high milage. These cars run forever - if you treat them well.

It appears that you drive a little over 20k per year. Why would you buy anything new if your car is still doing fine? I'd say: do the math on your annual maintenance cost. Let it be $1000 a year. Or $1500 to be conservative.... The depreciation of any newer car will be more than that. You can get a lot of maintenance done for the depreciation of that "newer" 335xi. Mind you: it's a turbo and five years old too.

Save your money for the day you really need a new car. Or spend your money on a nice vacation and explore the world...

Great deal buy it now. You are not going to find another car for that much for that low of miles.

...the dings and scrapes on the body are maddening for me to look at every day. I hate to invest money into body work on a car with this much mileage, and I want my car to look good. There's also some wear on the interior, most the driver side because of the cheap plastic they use on the interior door handle and the area around the center console. I can live with that stuff, but the exterior flaws are tearing at me.

Seems like a great deal. Check out the service records and if good, I say go for it.

If you dont care for that new 4 series coupe coming out, go for it! Its a good deal. If you can negotiate, thats even better but in the end its still a good deal. I bought my 08 335XI coupe from a private seller back in september for $25,500. Fully loaded, all maintenance up to date, certified preowned with a year of warranty left, and clean car fax. I had it checked out before I bought it to make sure nothing was wrong with it mechanically and it checked out ok. It had a couple blemishes on the exterior (as no used car is perfect) but nothing to make me walk away from it with everything else about it being good. Mine had 47k miles, so 17k miles is nothing on that car. Good luck!

Please don't listen to all these fools telling you to get the guy to drop $2-3k off his asking price. WTF!!! The car has only 17,000 miles plus a yr left of warranty. How the f*ck are you gonna beat that.
