Maps Update is very confusing
So I am thoroughly confused because there is conflicting information issued by BMW.
According to http://store.bmwgpsmaps.com/ ANY 2009-2010 3-Series MUST be updated at a dealer. But, many posters here prove that that is not the case. But, at the same time, a BMW dealer sold me the update USB which clearly states it should work on my 335. But alas, it does not. Up to this point in my life, I didn't think Germans were this sloppy. Anyone have perspective on what is going on? Do the product people at BMW know what they are doing? Seems like incompetence. |

Do you have a newer firmware on the iDrive? I think for some people with 09/10 models, if they have their firmware updated before by BMW, then the USB maps will work. My dad has an 2009 BMW early Apr/09 build. I've tried to do the USB update from the 09 maps straight to the 13 maps, and it doesn't work. I plugged it into the USB in the glove box, and the USB only flashes a few times, and it stops flashing and nothing happens. Even after waiting a few minutes, still nothing happens. The USB is formatted to FAT32, with only the 2 files in the "root" folder. No luck... ![]() The firmware on his car hasn't been updated before.. It'll be a trip to the dealer, like a few other people have experienced. |

Just to clarify before paying for a fsc code. I have a 09/2008 build. To the ppl that weren't successful with the usb, does the cic detect that a newer version is on the usb or does your screen show nothing after inserting the usb? I get a prompt that a newer version has been detected from the usb and then asks for the fsc code.

Sorry if this is a dumb question.
How are you guys updating? Are you driving around for 45 minutes? Leaving the car on for 45 minutes? Leaving it on a battery charger? Or just using accessory mode and the battery doesn't drain as much since it recognizes its updating? |

I hook up my charger in "supply" mode just to ensure battery doesn't go dead - and leave window open so I can check progress without having to sit in car the whole time. Done 3 cars so far no problem...

My 328i's build date is 9/2009 and it required the firmware update before maps could be updated from 2009 to 2012. Like others have stated, if you are unsure if you have the latest firmware load the maps onto a USB drive, plug it into the USB port in the glovebox and see if it asks if you want to update. If it does then you are good to go, just need to get the FSC code. If it doesn't then you will possibly need the firmware update and will need to go to the dealer. If you still have 2009 maps then chances are you will need the firmware update.

I also went to the dealer today and they said there is no software update available. They will charge me $210.00 for the Nav update + about 1.5 hours labor @ $120.00 and hour. Total about $400.00 to update the Nav.....sooooo not worth it.
